martlewis Posted June 7, 2009 Posted June 7, 2009 Hi all,I'm now a week into riding a bike and loving every journey. Its that bad I find myself getting up early for work and taking the long way round!Anyway I want to get a set of paniers for carrying paperwork, books, briefcase, etc., but am not sure what to even look at. Any help and suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I have a Yamaha YBR125 with a standard rack on the back as factory fitted. I have looked at top boxes which I will consider in the future but definately want paniers for now.Can anyone point me to reasonably priced set of paniers and a mounting kit to suit my bike please? The only size consideration is that they willbe big enough to take a couple of the fatter A4 ring binders each side. Many thanks,M. Quote
Guest Posted June 7, 2009 Posted June 7, 2009 You might be better off with a top box, tank bag and a rucksack. Panniers might not be big enough for a briefcase. Also you have to have them well balanced on both sides with equal weights in them. A top box would be your best bet. Other than that, there are loads of online shops for bike travelling gear. Quote
martlewis Posted June 7, 2009 Author Posted June 7, 2009 I'll look into a box instead then, thanks for the advice, they're just so bloomin' expensive Quote
Roadtorque Posted June 7, 2009 Posted June 7, 2009 You didn't say what bike, If you talk top box, it would have to be the large one,,Don't think tank bag or ruck sack, would be ideal for what you discribe,, hard panniers would be the best option, but would be around the £300 quid mark,,If your lucky enough to have a Bonnie, then triumph do what they call office panniers Quote
martlewis Posted June 7, 2009 Author Posted June 7, 2009 It's for a Yamaha YBR125, as mentioned in my first post Might be a visit to CMC tomorrow to see what's on offer. Quote

Guest akey Posted June 8, 2009 Posted June 8, 2009 Have a look at soft tail packs mate, they come in cheap (£30ish) and my oxford one will take a few A4 ring binders like you describe. The cheapest hard panniers I have found are the Givi E21 (£100 a pair) but then you have to buy the rack for them as well (£120+). The E21s will take A4 stuff probably a couple of the normal (thin) sized ones each. Quote
martlewis Posted June 10, 2009 Author Posted June 10, 2009 Ended up with a 30l Givi top box after all. It just meant I had no choice but to sort all the junk in my car boot and see what I actually "need" to be carrying around... Out goes the briefcase and most of the folders There's the option of fitting an additional rear/brake light to the box... Worth it or not? Does anyone use them? Quote
Guest Posted June 18, 2009 Posted June 18, 2009 HiThinking of going on a trip for a week or so with a YBR 125.However not sure of best way to carry luggage.Topbox will fit but dont think will hold enough.Tried some Oxford First Time panniers however need to be fastened under seat, and seat is fixed. So dont fancy trying to keep getting seat on/off bike to remove panniersAny other suggestions Givi E21 look ok but not sure about fixings.Or may I just be better strapping a rucksack to the back seatThanks Quote
Guest Posted June 19, 2009 Posted June 19, 2009 I'll look into a box instead then, thanks for the advice, they're just so bloomin' expensivea pannier set with mountings will cost double that of a box, otherwise its throwovers, try the oxford range at MandP, Quote

Chimera101 Posted June 19, 2009 Posted June 19, 2009 From what I remember of my YBR125 (before a car broke it ) there isn't a lock for the seat.however i'd suggest a tank bag for carrying atleast some of your gear, they are easy to fit and have a reasonable capacity. Also I had some panniers from HG that fitted over the top of the seat and attached to the bar under the back of the seat (I'm sure it has a proper name but I don't know it) Quote
Guest Posted June 19, 2009 Posted June 19, 2009 Havent had bike long, but pretty sure seat is fixed.Chimera101, HG panniers.. going to google them now cheers Quote
Chimera101 Posted June 19, 2009 Posted June 19, 2009 these are the panniers I had http://www.hein-gericke.co.uk/shop/product_info.php/products_id/6646I think the middle strap is intended to go under the seat but I found that they worked well enough with the ties that came with them and a couple of bungee cords Quote
