Bill_on_a_bike Posted June 9, 2009 Posted June 9, 2009 Trying to get a mate of mine's Honda CG started, but can't get a spark at the spark plug. Tried two different sparks, one out of my old SR which I know to be working fine.I'm no expert on ignition systems and stuff, is there anything that's likely to have gone? It seems most things just need direct replacing if anything.Cheers for help guysBill Quote

Bill_on_a_bike Posted June 9, 2009 Author Posted June 9, 2009 What am I looking for? lose connections? Is there a way to test it? I thought you could put a multi meter across a coil in some way to get a reading, I guess you need a haynes or something to know what it should be. Quote
rennie Posted June 9, 2009 Posted June 9, 2009 it's exactly what it says on the tin! a coil, so should have some sort of low resistance,if it's open circuit it's no goodalso check if it's down to earthedit. make sure you're testing the actual coil though not a relay or solenoid or thermal cut out Quote
Bill_on_a_bike Posted June 9, 2009 Author Posted June 9, 2009 Coil, 2 contacts, Multimeter across them, set on ohms of some order of magnitude? Quote
rennie Posted June 9, 2009 Posted June 9, 2009 ohms not Mohms, depends on the meter.coil should be maybe 20 to 50 ohms, I'm guessing shouldn't be a dead short but certainly shouldn't be thousands of ohms Quote
Bill_on_a_bike Posted June 9, 2009 Author Posted June 9, 2009 Cool cheers rennie i'll pick up a multimeter from my grans tomorrow. The bike uses a breakers ignition system, which I fear might be a topic for the mechanic of yesteryear. Having familurised myself with the basics of it, apparently they can get dirty which can cause this. If it comes to getting the engine cover off this thing for a look at them, any tips on what I should do/check? Quote

rennie Posted June 9, 2009 Posted June 9, 2009 do you mean it's got points bill?they're easy! just clean them up like you would a spark plug electrode.feeler guage to set the gap, sorted Quote
