martlewis Posted June 14, 2009 Posted June 14, 2009 Been looking through all the threads about satnavs and especially the Tomtom Rider but can't justify the cost yet. I have a normal Tomtom but without headphone socket so I was just wondering if anyone else uses one that's not bike specific and how you get on without having the voice instructions? Quote
Stu Posted June 14, 2009 Posted June 14, 2009 i use my rider without the voice instructions never had a problem just remember to plan well ahead so you dont miss a turn Quote
PhatDad Posted June 14, 2009 Posted June 14, 2009 I'm the opposite, I have TOMTOM on my old mobile that I took away and listen to the instructions only and there's only been a couple of times it's sent me wrong direction due to there being a new road added to a round about etc. Can't you get hold of a bluetooth headset for the helmet and link it? Quote
martlewis Posted June 14, 2009 Author Posted June 14, 2009 I've got a Tomtom One V3 without bluetooth, other option is the Tomtom Rider v2 with headset but it's expensive. Curious if anyone has tried the headset bluetooth with an iPhone tho? That might just about justify buying it. Quote
Stu Posted June 14, 2009 Posted June 14, 2009 your mobile links up to the tomtom and can use it through that the bluetooth headset should also link up to the phone separately Quote
martlewis Posted June 14, 2009 Author Posted June 14, 2009 Stu, so basically the mobile bluetooths to the satnav, assuming it has onscreen call/reject etc, and then the satnav bluetooths to the helmet? Quote
Stu Posted June 14, 2009 Posted June 14, 2009 spot on not all phone models are supported though best off checking can even read text messages too Quote
Stu Posted June 14, 2009 Posted June 14, 2009 http://www.tomtom.com/phones/compatibil ... deviceId=5not showing as the iphone is compatible though!!! Quote
Guest akey Posted June 14, 2009 Posted June 14, 2009 I have the tomtomV1, and its just as stu says the phone connects to the tomtom which connects to the helmet (usually through a scarla rider).I cant read text messages as my phone isnt fully compatible but I can answer the phone and make phone calls when stationary (the tomtom copies your phonebook but will only allow outgoing calls when stationary). martlewis Posted June 14, 2009 Author Posted June 14, 2009 Yeah, looks like they've only tested the iphone with the Tomtom Go series. The other thing I just realised is that it's a bluetooth headset rather than helmet set. I want to find something that would work with speakers in the helmet.Am thinking I might have to make do with a tankbag for my current Tomtom. Quote
martlewis Posted June 15, 2009 Author Posted June 15, 2009 Decided to order a Givi S850 and see how I get on with it. Quote
PhatDad Posted June 15, 2009 Posted June 15, 2009 On the 17th of this month Apple are releasing a new firmware for their iPhone which, if I am correct, will open up the bluetooth options on the phone and allow you to connect to a hell of a lot more bluetooth stuff. I'm still not sure whether it allows you to send files to each other though but it should help anyone that wants to connect their iPhone to TomTom or headsets. Quote
martlewis Posted June 15, 2009 Author Posted June 15, 2009 there's also an iPhone version of tomtom due out so thinking I could use the givi case for the iPhone eventually. Quote
martlewis Posted June 17, 2009 Author Posted June 17, 2009 Just watched the Mac developers conference and definately waiting for Tomtom on iPhone rather then shelling out for a Tomtom Rider.http://events.apple.com.edgesuite.net/0906paowdnv/event/index.html?internal=ijalrmacu Tomtom demo is at about 1hr 20mins.And best of all with headphones I'll be able to hear instructions and music. Quote
martlewis Posted June 17, 2009 Author Posted June 17, 2009 And now you'll see how undecided I am as the Givi case is out of stock until September so order cancelled. I was looking at a scala Q2 FM for about £120 to use with the iPhone etc but now I found a Rider2 for £282 with a headset (not FM). What to do!!! Quote
PhatDad Posted June 17, 2009 Posted June 17, 2009 To be honest, I've had no problems what so ever using TomTOM on my old mobile phone which i keep in my topbox so only use the voice commands. I'd wait until TomTom comes out on the iphone and then use that with head phones. Turn by turn voice is spot on with the TomTom software so you don't need to see the map in my opinion. Save yourself some pounds and hopefully if you do decide to use the givi pack you'll find one in stock by then. Quote
martlewis Posted June 22, 2009 Author Posted June 22, 2009 Tried that with a smaller version of the globe, plotted a route to Buxton, set off and the wind made it spin... 5 mins later heading towards Australia Quote

TC Posted June 24, 2009 Posted June 24, 2009 I use a PDA with TomTomm on it secured to the yoke.Just glance down every now and then and it tells next turn is 7 miles away 2nd exit off the roundabout. You can see it on the yoke if you lookhttp://i434.photobucket.com/albums/qq63/brazenf91/Camera1123.jpg?t=1245802080 Quote
martlewis Posted June 24, 2009 Author Posted June 24, 2009 Trialling a few options at the moment. I've got a tank bag with a clear pocket on top so I'm trying the car tomtom in that without voice, also trying the free satnav on iPhone in the tank bag but with it connected to the mp3 socket on my headset for voice. Only problem with free satnav is the voice is computer generated and sounds like a dodgy robot! But if it works and it's free Failing that I'll buy tomtom for the iPhone later in the summer. Quote

martlewis Posted June 24, 2009 Author Posted June 24, 2009 It's called xGPS. Don't know if it's any good but will test it on the way home tonight. You'll need to jailbreak your iPhone and load it via Cydia installer. Can't find it on itunes. Let me know if you need help. Quote
Guest Posted June 24, 2009 Posted June 24, 2009 I had a quick look around after reading this post and found it, actually. I'll think about jailbreaking my phone, but I got the 3.0 upgrade recently and I don't know if that release has been jailbroken yet. Also saw a satnav app in the proper itunes store, something called MobileNavigator. £35!!! Looks good, though... Quote
