rosszx9r Posted June 14, 2009 Posted June 14, 2009 hi,i've just bought a bewolf stubby exhaust for my zx9r. it says it's road legal and that it improves performance without change in fueling.seems a little odd as it must be more free flowing than a standard pipe so jetting must change. as the bike has carbs not ECU, dyno runs will be more time consuming/ expensive. anyone know where i can get more info on carb settings? i was changing the main jet and neddle anyway due to possible wear but thought a stage 1 k&n tuning set might be more appropriate. i'd appreciate thoughts/ advice.... Stu Posted June 14, 2009 Posted June 14, 2009 waste of time it needs to go on a dyno otherwise its just guess work and it shouldnt cost more or not that much more anyway!! Quote
rosszx9r Posted June 14, 2009 Author Posted June 14, 2009 waste of time it needs to go on a dyno otherwise its just guess work and it shouldnt cost more or not that much more anyway!!i assumed it would cost more only because a carb change needs a carb strip as opposed to a tweak using a pc connected to an ecu.anyone know what a tuning session for a carbed bike is likely to cost?i was hoping that someone else had used a similar exhaust and knew the extent of the change needed.(appreciate your point tho' stu... just trying to keep costs down... ) Quote
Stu Posted June 14, 2009 Posted June 14, 2009 to be honest it can take the same amount of work as its all trial and error till its right a power commander can take anywhere from 1 hour to 3 hours to set up depending on the bike last time i got a quote for a carbed bike it was £120 all in that was 5 years ago and a power commander was around the same price the trouble now is finding a decent tuner that can set carbs up Quote
rosszx9r Posted June 14, 2009 Author Posted June 14, 2009 the trouble now is finding a decent tuner that can set carbs up i'm in abingdon and quite near to the MPS store where there are regular biker days.... any recomedations for this area? Quote
Stu Posted June 14, 2009 Posted June 14, 2009 i know nothing of that area infact i dont even know a decent tuner round here now as the last one sold up Quote
Pete Posted June 14, 2009 Posted June 14, 2009 hi,...it says it's road legal and that it improves performance without change in fueling... I have a race can on my GSX600F and I contacted the manufacturer (Motad I think) about any fueling mods. They said I didn't need to do anything, but it was running a bit lumpy and was gobbling a little bit more fuel. I balanced the carbs and it runs sweet as a nut.Moral of the story is just try balancing the carbs. If the manufacturer says no change in fueling I wouldn't mess with it. Quote
Stu Posted June 14, 2009 Posted June 14, 2009 like SuzukiPete pete has said try a carb balance first before you comit to anything after that if your still not convinced get it on a dyno and see what the fueling is like dyno runs are around £25 -£35 and you usually get that back if you book your bike in for setting up Quote

kja.busa Posted June 15, 2009 Posted June 15, 2009 A dynojet kit and if you want too, a K&N should be able to sort it, first thing is take the bike for a run and then check the plugs see if its running lean. Quote
Guest akey Posted June 15, 2009 Posted June 15, 2009 I have run various pipes with carbed bikes and never changed the fueling. To get a reasonable response you need not just an end can but a complete system, free flowing air filter and then dyno runs to set it all up right as its not just jet size, its needle position as well.If you hand your bike to a dyno house for them to sort then a carbed bike is a hell of a lot more than an FI bike.FI bike - dyno run, plug laptop in change fueling, dyno run (for as many cycles as needed).Carb bike - dyno run, strip carbs, adjust something (jet / needle), refit carbs, dyno run (for as many cycles as needed). If you are just paying for the dyno runs and doing the work yourself then its ok but if you are paying for the tech to do the work as well its gonna cost.If you have just changed the end can and nothing else then I would get the carbs balanced and leave it at that. If you want more then get saving.IMHO the can on its own will not make enough of difference to merit a dynojet stage 1 kit.PS - I ran my old gixer with a pipercross filter and a Carbon Can Co stubby exhaust, balanced the carbs then ran it on a dyno and the fueling was pretty much spot on with no changes.
