wannars125 Posted June 15, 2009 Posted June 15, 2009 Ok, so I'm not going to go out in shorts and t-shirt. Too scared of ripping myself to shreds. Haven't got enough cash to invest in leathers or kevlar jeans either. Is shorts and t-shirt under the textiles with the air zips open as far as they can go safe or would I still getting a proper bashing if I fell off? Quote
Pete Posted June 15, 2009 Posted June 15, 2009 I wear shorts and a tshirt under my textiles and don't see a problem with it. I don't see the point in putting great heavy jeans under my textiles - the textiles will take the brunt of a fall and a slide and if they don't the jeans will only last about 5 feet before it starts on flesh (read that somewhere last week.....).In winter I tend to wear thermal long johns, tracky bottoms, socks, ski socks then textiles. Up top I wear a couple of thermal t-shirts, a thermal vest with a zip up neck, a jumper and a textile jacket. Damn that seems like a lot of gear now we're in the middle of summer!! Now all I wear is shorts and t-shirt under textiles, sometimes I don't even bother with anything other than boxer shorts! But don't tell anyone... Quote
wannars125 Posted June 15, 2009 Author Posted June 15, 2009 Woo! Commando Pete lol eugh!I'll definately give that a go the next time it gets unbearably hot!I know during the winter I don't get too bad on the legs, thermals and jeans are fine. On top though, 2 t shirts, a shirt, a jumper, thermal layer on coat and coat lol! Quote
techno Posted June 15, 2009 Posted June 15, 2009 Both my textiles and my leather jacket have vents in thenm that allow airflow around my body! Will never stop cooking when am stood stil just need to keep moving the faster the cooler! Quote
Guest akey Posted June 15, 2009 Posted June 15, 2009 I use EDZ an EDZ undersuit, it wicks the sweat away and keeps you as cool as you can be.I would open all the vents in your kit and wear an undersuit (if you cant get one try some thermals as they do the same, it sounds wierd but it works) Quote
PhatDad Posted June 15, 2009 Posted June 15, 2009 Like akey I wear wicking underwear which works well but I also wear a Frank Thomas mesh jacket. A bit like a jacket made of two string vests but the mesh is tougher with smaller holes. It also has elbow, shoulder and back protection but keeps me really cool. In fact it's sometimes too cool when riding. Quote
Ratser Posted June 16, 2009 Posted June 16, 2009 Last week, to go to where we were watching the racing on the IOM, I wore my normal jeans, t-shirt and a fleece, gloves and lid and a pair of trainers. It felt so strange, but I was so glad at the time that I did it.We weren't going far either. But to be honest, I wouldn't have done it here, and probably wont again.Until next year. Quote
bbobeckyj Posted June 16, 2009 Posted June 16, 2009 EDZ or similar, sport shops sell the same stuff on sale often, as do places like Lidl.I find that anything with full length legs and sleeves is best. It stops the leather or textiles sticking to your skin which makes it worse, and keeps a layer of air between which insulates for maintaining temperature. Quote
Guest Mr Miller Posted June 16, 2009 Posted June 16, 2009 I use one of those long sleeved base layers - my fave was less than a tenner from 'The Mountain Warehouse' - I haven't tried the one I got from Lidl yet - but they work on the same principle wherever you get 'em from!*ahem!* I also got a pair of the compression leggings too, I've only tried them on in the house! All I can think of is that I'm wearing tights! ..........and I'm not at a specialist party, either! Now, if I'm wearing them to wick away sweat, it's obviously a warm day....do I wear my boxers under these leggings, over the leggings or do I go commando? Quote
Korben Posted June 16, 2009 Posted June 16, 2009 Commando... Ideally the wicking clothing should be in direct contact with the skin.Could you let me know which compression leggings you got... Looking ideally for a full wicking compression suit. It's meant to reduce muscle fatigue... Quote
Hot_Stu Posted June 17, 2009 Posted June 17, 2009 How about a Borat style mankini ? http://www.drinkstuff.com/productimg/25157_large.jpg Quote
Guest Mr Miller Posted June 17, 2009 Posted June 17, 2009 Commando... Ideally the wicking clothing should be in direct contact with the skin.Could you let me know which compression leggings you got... Looking ideally for a full wicking compression suit. It's meant to reduce muscle fatigue... Errrrrrrmmmmmm.....I've never been asked to go commando by a bloke before! ..................well, there's a first time for everything, I suppose! I got the compression underwear in the last round of Aldi's bike stuff give-away, Korbs! I have only used them once and I wasn't sure whether I liked them or not! It was an unusual felling to say the least and because I'm quite hairy, I felt like all my hairs were being pulled about! When I stood still they were reasonably comfortable and do feel quite supportive around the muscles but walking around in them I got a deffinite 'cool' type of feeling going on - difficult for me to explain; it was as if the warm air gap that you get under your textiles wasn't there - I suppose that's the material doing it's job and keeping me cool as I was prancing around in my bedroom wearing tights and my textiles! Good job Mrs. Miller was busy with the telly!Anyhoo - cos of my last very warm ride out on the bike, I'm tempted to try these leggings again and see how they work in the warmth! I am still looking into getting some kevlar jeans too - just waiting for an expected tax rebate!........fingers crossed - but I wont hold my breath!Hope that helps Korbs - but have a look in those discounted outdoor and sports shops, you might get a bargain!.....and Hot Stu?........I don't think that's wise! Quote
Ratser Posted June 17, 2009 Posted June 17, 2009 I got those ones as well Mr Miller (oh no wait, it was Lidl ones - though probably the same anyway). And your right, put them on at first and you feel all cool (temperature wise).I haven't used them when it's been hot though, as have mainly used my EDZ layers. They are good though. Quote
Guest Mr Miller Posted June 17, 2009 Posted June 17, 2009 Ah, I see! It wasn't me being all stupid then! The diffs betwixt Aldi's & Lidl's bike gear seems just to be colours - I felt them both and there wasn't much in it. To be honest, our local Aldi always seems to have ski wear for sale and there are usually base layers of some description with 'em!Now, in a proper, manly, hetero-kind of way........do you go commando in them?Hmmmmm?.......I wonder if I should 'invest' in a silky posing pouch - just in case I need to remove my troos!? Quote
Guest akey Posted June 17, 2009 Posted June 17, 2009 Mr M,I even wear my EDZ under my kevlar jeans as it helps to keep you cool.Any synthetic base layer will do the job, I have used EDZ, Helly Hansen, danger rocks and Tog24 stuff in the past all to good effect. They also really help when its time to remove leathers cos you aint stuck to the leather with sweat !!!! Quote

bigup Posted June 17, 2009 Posted June 17, 2009 i wear leather trousers and textile jacketi own a one piece leather but dont wear it, as its just too hot for it imo. Quote
wiffers Posted June 19, 2009 Posted June 19, 2009 Usually boxer shorts and T shirt under textiles with vents open.I find kevlar jeans make my legs/groin a LOT coolerI also find putting a skin tight lycra (fighting) top on keeps my top cool Quote
martlewis Posted June 25, 2009 Posted June 25, 2009 Am I right in thinking it's the EDZ all season leggings and top on mandp.co.uk for £25.00 each that you wear? Looking for something after a painfully hot ride yesterday to go under my Frank Thomas textiles. Mainly to stop the linings sticking to my skin. Quote

Looking for something after a painfully hot ride yesterday to go under my Frank Thomas textiles. Mainly to stop the linings sticking to my skin. Any wicking gear would work mate. I bought the cheap (£12) set from Lidl recently and they help loads. You really notice it when you take the textiles off and the breeze cools down all the sweat that has wicked away from your skin as you feel the temp drop. I don't like the fact that the inside of my textile trousers get so wet from the wicked sweat though and hang them on the line to try and get the breeze to blow through the legs and dry them out. Guest Mr Miller Posted June 26, 2009 Posted June 26, 2009 Ok - now I know I usually do but this is gonna make me sound like a real strange one - Lycra compression underwear, as we all seem to agree, is cracking at wicking and keeping cool/warm, not letting satin-y liners stick to your bits and ease of leather/textiles removal....If I go commando (and at my time of life, it will probably be somewhat uncomfortable - what with needing support....and no, I'm not bragging!) then fair enough, I'm wearing tights with no pants! If however, I decide that I should wear my boxers, won't it be uncomfortable if I'm trying to get them positioned correctly and then pulling my tights over them?!?!What do other's suggest? I only have boxers at my disposal, although there may be a pair of Calvin K's fitted ones in my drawer somewhere!...and yes, I fully understand that by posting this I will be inundated with sarcastic comments but I have broad shoulders and will happily take the ribbing! Let me know if I'm being over cautious....or just plain stupid!Cheers for the help!Mr. M.And before you ask - there are NO pictures available! Quote
martlewis Posted June 26, 2009 Posted June 26, 2009 Mr M, damn good question. I ordered some EDZ yesterday and the order arrived at work today. Am gonna wear them home tonight and hopefully by the time I get there I'll not be glue to the inside of my textiles. I'm now suffering the same boxer short dilema Quote
Guest akey Posted June 26, 2009 Posted June 26, 2009 I wear my boxers under my EDZs, the EDZ stuff and the wicking base layers should be fine, although the compression kit is usually a tighter fit so may not be as suitable with boxers. Quote
Guest Mr Miller Posted June 29, 2009 Posted June 29, 2009 After road-testing them for 200+ miles and sitting around in them in the sun yesterday, I feel I can now comment properly........Yes, they were tight on the legs (no shoot, Sherlock!) but the 'novelty' soon wore off and I couldn't actually feel that I had them on but I was able to wear the loose-style boxers underneath them! They did help with getting the textile trousers on & off and definitely made a difference to how sweaty the liners got, or didn't, as the case may be!So for me a big for my cheap compression underwear leggings!I didn't actually mean to buy compression leggings, I just wanted a cheap base layer to help...so I'll still keep an eye out for some! What were your thoughts on the EDZ's, Mart? Quote
Pete Posted June 29, 2009 Posted June 29, 2009 Here's a link to the EDZ site for those that want it!http://www.edz.biz/bike/Product_pages/A ... layer.html Quote
