How do you get into racing?

How do you go about becoming the next Rossi..?

What are the steps that you have to take to get racing?

Thanks

1. About 14 years of age

2. A rich dad or sponsor

3. Talent

I suppose if you had the above 3 things you could aim for a start in the Red Bull Rookies Cup, but to get there you'd probably have to be British Youth Champion on a 125cc and taken part in some Spanish Championship races.

Win the RBRC, get a team to notice you and give you your chance in the World or European 125cc circuits, win those championships.

Move on to the 250cc or from next year the Moto2 ( 600cc Honda engines). Win that or be consistantly a top finisher.

Get invited to test a 800cc monster, do well. Get a contract with a good team. Win 99 GP races, 8 world championships and countless podiums and you should be close.

Good luck

p.s If it works out for you, can I be the guy that travels round the world with you and your team and all I have to do is look after your mouthguard and ear protection?

haha, I'm not 14, nor rich or talented. Guess that's my life over then..

Is there any "grass roots" racing on motorbikes?

I race Downhill MTB and theres several levels, Starts off with regionals, then nationals, then world cups, Is it similar in motorbike racing ? Is the a British governing body for racing?

Thanks..

Try looking into Auto66 http://www.motorcycle-racetrack.co.uk/

They run the local racing around here and on there website should give you the information you need with regards to getting your licence etc

look forward to watching you at Elvington and who knows Assen sometime soon

Jongw, depends how old you are? if your 20 years old or younger then you could probably get practising and maybe do some club meets if your any good then you could see about entering in a superstock or supersport championship but it will cost good money even at national level as you need a good bike and mechanics.

Nothing to say you can't do it but it will as described before take a lot of self investment and then of course the other thing you need is talent which is a one word answer for saying balance, bravery, skill, tactical knowledge, etc..

and of course.... what every sports man or woman requires.... some luck. Right place, right time, etc...

BTW if you 20+ nothing to say you can't do it... but obviously the younger you start the better... don't think Troy Bayliss started properly until he was 26 - 27 years old

I'm 18 so I guess that's good, Never even rode a motorbike in my life though, so i guess that's a 'slight' handicap..

I have this thing though, Were I can't do something without it ending in racing. I just fancied getting a little motorbike the other day, but now all i can think of is racing!

I probably wouldn't even think about starting racing till 2011 season anyway,That'll give me a few off seasons training and some practice on a bike ( and time to save up!) I'd have to get good at it first, don't want to be coming last! haha

All this advice is really helpful!

I get the impression that most people who ride motorbikes don't race? Most just ride for pleasure/ transport?

Learning to ride would be useful if u wanna race :P

Younger racers are often brought up with bikes, and learn to ride offroad at an early age.... but dont despaire, lots of people start racing at a much older age.

It is very VERY expensive to race... getting your race licence... money for tyres, fuel, repairs, entry fees... it all adds up.

Learn to ride.... racing might be summat you think u wanna do, but when you get riding, you may change your mind.

Good luck :)

Best advice is to get yourself down to a club racing session at your nearest track (track or motocross) get round the paddock and ask the racers there how they got into it.

yamaha and suzuki both have off road schools where you can learn everything so again 5 min on google and a couple of phone calls may help you there.

When finishing school I was very very close to going to a race school and getting my race license, after punching the numbers, and talking to people that have done a little racing I knew it just wasn't feasible. Unless you have money to use as toilet paper, it would be quite a struggle. I'm not saying give up though, if you really have got the skills you could get spotted and sponsered, but don't go into it expecting something like that to happen. Also don't worry about age, there are people in british super stock in there 40's and thats practically ancient :P

I'm loosely planning to do club racing in the future, but not until I can afford it more comfortably.

I think to be honest, there is a large proportion of the biking community that would like to race but as mentioned above money is the main issue. Motorcycle racing is probably a bit cheaper to get into than auto, but it's still damn expensive.

Also important to remember that you race only on the track. If you want to race do it on a track and not the road (by that I don't mean don't enter the Isle of Man TT I mean stay safe when riding on the road, as when racing you don't have cars, lamp post, etc... around to hit)

But all the best mate and if you make it we all expect paddock passes and jobs as mechanics :D

Im going to be doing a track day soon and if I really enjoy that then I might see if I can get into racing, I'm a similar age to you (20) and I have been doing a little research for the last few days. Basically there are race clubs that you can join that do championships throughout the year, racing at most of the popular tracks around the country. One example is bemsee - http://www.bemsee.net/ and another is new era - http://www.neweramcc.org/. So basically you get your race license (which I dont THINK involves any kind of test apart from an eye test, you just pay £30 or whatever and they send you a license). Then you join a club such as the ones I have mentioned, obviously by this point it would be a good idea to have bought a race bike (converting a road bike to being race usable seems to be more money and hassle than its worth). So you pay around £35 for membership to most of these clubs but then it costs roughly £250 per 'event' that you enter from what I can see and I think an 'event' is basically a weekend consisting of a couple of races at a specific track. Then at the end of the season you see how you did in the championship and progress through the ranks/championships each season :)

Hope that helps... if you do get into racing let me know and if I have actually followed something through for the first time ever then I might see you on the track :D

EDIT: also take a look at this getting started page on new era http://www.neweramcc.org/startingracing.htm
