Checking Gearbox Oil?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I am a newbie to the world of bikes and have just passed my CBT and bought a stunning Honda MTX-125R!!

I am loving the feeling of being on a Motorbike, it's really getting under my skin!

It maybe a silly question but how does one check the level of the g/box oil? I have unscrewed the plug on the gearbox housing and it just looks empty inside, there's no dipstick or sight glass that I can see, and even with the bike level it seems empty...

It's a 2 stroke btw if that makes any difference to the gearbox side of things.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I don't want to run the box/clutch dry of oil.

Kind regards,

Mat

The engine oil is the gearbox oil.. use the sight glass at the side of the engine..

Hi there, thanks for the reply.

My engine is 2 stroke so I understand that the engine oil is mixed with the fuel. The gear oil topup on mine is on the gearbox housing (part of the engine) but I cannot see any sight glass. Is it jsut a case of draining it completely and then filling up with the specified amount?

Cheers, Mat

Its usually either sight glass or dipstick as the others have said.

I have seen some vehicles though that have an additional screw, that you take out, and when its full it starts to leak out of the hole. I guess it could be like this but either way I'd get yourself down Halfords and buy a haynes manual. Or maybe you could order one online, or maybe even download one for free.

2 Stroke - 2 oils, engine oil in the engine for running./gearbox etc. seperate oil tank with 2 stroke oil for fuel oil mix..

4 stroke, only oil in engine not required with fuel.

i think if you have bought gear oil, you have the wrong stuff, get hold of a haynes before you put that stuff in there..

Engine oil = 10W40 etc

Gear oil = ATF Dextron

2 Stroke = 2 stroke. TTS/ TTX etc

Ahh okay

I went to the bike shop and they recomended:

(Motul Transoil SAE 10W30 2-stroke Gearbox oil)

Say's it's for 2 stroke bikes with a wet clutch

Is this going to be the wrong stuff?

Or should I just use, 4 stroke petrol engine oil in the gearbox.

All this advice is greatly appreciated btw!

Thanks,

Mat

thats fine, had visions of you trying to put ATF in there.... but get a manual it will help you with most things you'll come across..

I have found the level bolt. It was hidden behind the brake foot lever! I've changed the oil and it all seems to be running well.

Many thanks for the advice and help. I was out riding all weekend. Loving it!
