Phil_D Posted June 19, 2009 Posted June 19, 2009 Random Q: am i better to lubricate the drive chain before or after cleaning? Quote
TC Posted June 19, 2009 Posted June 19, 2009 I use a scottoiler but still tend to use a chain lube about every 500 miles after a ride while the chain is still hot/warm so the oil can get into the o rings. You cant beat the sound of chain lube sizzling on a hot chainAfter i clean the bike - NoAfter i clean the chain - Yes Quote
Phil_D Posted June 19, 2009 Author Posted June 19, 2009 I meant after cleaning the bike but i went ahead and clean+ lubed the chain and cant be arsed to clean it anymore Quote
d3nch Posted June 20, 2009 Posted June 20, 2009 Ive bought a very neglected ER-5. Yesterday I bought some chain lube, went for a ride, got it nice and hot, came back sprayed it right on. Later on I was on here looking around, and I saw the guide to oiling the chain. It said about cleaning the chain before lubing it or you could end up making it worse....So this evening I went out and followed the steps in the guide, even making the ultimate chain cleaning tool, two tooth brushes on a bit of wood.viewtopic.php?f=5&t=21360I've tried my best to get the chain clean, but as I say, it was very bad when I got the bike. Here is a photo of the before and after...http://img5.imageshack.us/img5/5200/20062009410.jpgD3nch Quote

j4ff Posted June 22, 2009 Posted June 22, 2009 That chain looks like its had its day.If you notice the second link in it doesnt even lie straight. The rear sprocket also looks a bit rounded off on the edges of the teeth.Mine had done 13000 mile.Lubed after every ride, cleaned and lubed when it was even slightly dirty.Looked like the day i bought it but looks are deceiving. After replacement the bike feels so much smoother less vibes slicker gearchanges a joy to ride.If it snaps on the move youll either end up with the chain on the floor behind you or worst case senario wrapped around the front sprocket and more than likely cracking the engine casing.Change it now for a hundred quid or risk having to buy a new engine.
