Hi,

Need some suggestions as I can't find much on the forum about this, althought the guide above is pretty informative I'm still not sure. What I need is something to attach to helmet for handsfree, music etc. Would be interested in something that can be installed on the bike, doesn't necessarily have to be wirefree. What I do want is:

FM Radio

MP3 connectivity

Bluetooth handsfree, doesn't need voice answering, call ID etc, as I pull over to use the phone but would like to be able to use it with the helmet on.

Not needing comms to pillion or another bike.

Any suggestions appreciated thanks.

edit: Been looking at Starcom1 but is it bluetooth for the phone?

I have an autocom set up on my fjr that does all when connected to my iphone. Connected thru tt rider 2 to do the sat nav in the ear 'ole thing as well.

Cardo Scala Rider headset.

Mp3 connectivity

Bluetooth capabilty for phone, satnav and another headset (enabling helmet to helmet comms up to 500m)

Although Dan also forgot that they come with FM radio as well.

So with the Cardo Scala rider Q2 you get:

FM Radio

MP3 connectivity (comes with cable)

Handsfree for phones (also connects with tomtom rider and Garmin Zumo)

Can also be used rider to pillion or bike to bike. Its rechargable so no need for batteries, no need to wire into bike (I use mine for MP3 every day for my commute - just over an hour each way - and only charge it once a week. It fits onto your lid (takes about 10 min to fit).

Dan and I both use these for all of the above, and I really rate them. If you are going to buy one, just check its the latest one with the MP3 jack, as the older ones dont have it.

If you want to use the starcom with bluetooth you have to buy the additional bluetooth module as well as the base kit.

I think the Scala Rider is looking hopefull, the only thing I was concerned with was a boom mic on a flip front helmet, having to continually adjust it every time I knock it with the helmet front... The main reason for looking at starcom was that it wouldn't need charging but if I canget away with charging maybe once or twice a week well then so be it. There's a few choices with the Scala with FM radio which I would really like. There's the Rider FM or the Rider Q2 and possibly others. Which would you think I should be looking for?

edit: There's also the option to go for the kit with an extra long boom mic which it suggests suit flip front helmets. If anyone uses this type of helmet with the Scala I would appreciate your advice too.

I bought the twinset mate. I believe it has standard length boom mic. TheWife uses a flip front helmet with no problem. The boom itself is quite robust and flexible and doesn't cause her any problems. I believe Hein gericke keep them in stock m8, so you can always go along and have a look at one.

Good bit of kit m8, you won't be disappointed.

Word of advice.... there is a little rubber plug .. where you plug it in to charge.... remember to put it back ..... wouldn't want you getting caught in the rain like that .....

Didn't happen to me .... honest ....

Would be terrible if that happened wouldn't it

Although I'm sure it said somewhere on the website not to use it in rain or snow :?:

All I need now is a friend to ride with and talk to :crybaby:

lol... :D

Yeah, it does say it is waterproof but not stormproof and to be fair it is. Assuming you remember to put the plug back in ....

Headset just arrived. Conveniently I'm finished work in four hours so perfect amount of time for it's first charge. While I'm waiting I'll get the clamp on the helmet ready to test it on the way home :D

I have a question already... It says that the speakers should touch your ears and if the helmet has cutouts in the padding then to put some foam in. Has anyone done this or don't you bother having them touching your ears?

Posted

Yes they should be snug against your ears for best results. Currently in my new shoei they are not ... and its noticable by the lack of volume, still loud enough like, but snug against the ears is better, for me anyway.

I've tried it riding home and ur right so I'll get some foam and move the speakers. Should the mic be right in front of my mouth cos if it is it touches as there's not much room between my gnashers and the front of the helmet?

Well, that depends where you mounted the clamp on the side ...

Mine sits just below my bottom lip when I know I won't be using it. When TheWife is out or I know I'll need to be available by phone its no biggie for me to just push it up into position. In position, yes it is up against your lips.. sort of... I forget its there tbh

So far so good with the Q2. I have to say the FM radio is next to useless as there's no rds so most of the time it's dropping in and out of tuning which is so annoying I just don't use it. The iphone as an ipod works a treat now I can charge it from the bike.

The worst annoyance though is when the phone rings the headset plays the national anthem. Please don't shoot me for this but for reasons better left unsaid I do not agree with having the royal family and find it really annoying. Anyone know if there is a way to change this?
