Phil_D Posted June 21, 2009 Posted June 21, 2009 Very occasionally my bike will go into a false neutral when changing gear, is this indicative of a problem? or is it just the result of a half arsed gear change? Quote
techno Posted June 22, 2009 Posted June 22, 2009 Sometimes bikes do this, i suppose if it happened regularly it may point to a problem. Quote
Bill_on_a_bike Posted June 22, 2009 Posted June 22, 2009 Try holding the gear shifter up as you let the clutch out. This seems to sort it for most people Quote
Colin the Bear Posted June 24, 2009 Posted June 24, 2009 It can be caused by a worn box or a too thin oil selection or the oil is hot from thrashing it. The Virago has one between every gear. Be gentle when you find one. Let your revs drop and change up. You can change down twice when you've got back into toothed territory Quote
Grumpy Old Git Posted June 29, 2009 Posted June 29, 2009 If it happens all the time (even when 'cold') and in all gear changes then the most lickly cause is a damaged or very worn gear selector. If you are 'happy' with stripping down a gearbox, you could take it apart and have a look - There should be very little play between the selector and layshaft. excessive wear should be easy to spot (scored metal and odd shaped) and a breakage even easier! If it only occurs when hot - change the gear oil for that recommended for warmer climates in the manual.Good Luck. Guest akey Posted June 29, 2009 Posted June 29, 2009 Can be a number of things,Bad gear change, some bikes just have them, worn selector, miss timed gearchange, thin oil all sorts. What bike is it, how often does it do it, does it only do it if you are light on the gear lever????I get one between 5th and 6th on the tiger if I lazy with the gear change (i.e. I dont use good pressure on the lever and sort of half click it in).
