Guest Posted June 22, 2009 Posted June 22, 2009 Hi All Im new to the site and have just been given a old Suzuki RG 125 Gamma, but it is in pretty bad shape. I want to rebuild it and get it on the road but dont know alot about bikes.I have spent some time reading up on them in the libarary and have been speaking to my local bike shops and have come up still a little clueless. The guy i spoke to at the bike shop told me it was a waste of time as i wouldnt get the parts for it and should scrap it and get a different bike, i really dont want to do that but not sure if that isnt the wise track to take.I thought i maybe could take parts off of other bikes like the Aprillia 125.... and try to build a custom bike, but this raises the question of insurance and road legality? My other thought was to take a Suzuki Gsx 400 engine(as its more avilible) and replace it and ristrict it to a 125.A few guys at my church ride but are completely clueless when it comes to fixing them so no point of reference to ask.Any advise would be appreciatedKind Regards Buck Quote
kja.busa Posted June 22, 2009 Posted June 22, 2009 Forget the 400cc engine idea, its not even worth thinking about. As for taking parts from other bikes like the Aprilia, not good either, more hasle than its worth. My advice would be to break the Suzuki for spares, sell them on ebay, then save the cash and put it towards something else, preferably a runner with tax and test. Quote
Bill_on_a_bike Posted June 22, 2009 Posted June 22, 2009 I doubt the engine of 400 would even nearly fit in the frame of the 125, because it's so much bigger, and I don't quite know how you planned on doing it, but it would never ever run right at 125cc. Tbh I think it would be very very very hard to do this, apart from a custom crank shaft and taller pisto.....this is silly, it aint happenin'!Is the bike of any kind of, nostalgic worth if you like? Is it a classic? Like the Yam. RD 350? Because if not, You're wasting your time and probably alot of money with it. what needs doing? talking about the egine I take it that that's got issues, with a 2 stroke you'll probably want a new head+barrel+piston, and that's gonna cost you alot and without prior knowledge, a hell of a lot of time to do.Like KJA said I think maybe bust it for parts and sell them on ebay is your best financial bet. In terms of getting yourself a bike to ride, you can pick up a bike in near road worthy condition for maybe £500. Hell, you can have my old 125 for £450 if you want it! It's fine apart from I think the piston rings are going, but for whatever reason it's burning oil when cold. This would be a fairly big job to do, but it'd get you on the road. Quote
Guest akey Posted June 22, 2009 Posted June 22, 2009 This all depends on a number of things, how bust up is it, if it needs a few bits and bobs here and there you could get yourself a little runner OK. Parts are available for the old RG but they are getting harder to get hold of.Having just re-read your post it would appear you are not overly mechanically minded, which means it would probably be a pain for you to do all the work yourself. All these things in mind I would go with what others have said and either break it for spares or flog it complete as spares or repair. If you were after a project bike to do as and when then it would be worth keeping and trying to restore it, but you would need to have money to throw at it and be willing to do the work yourself just for the love of the bike. Guest Posted June 22, 2009 Posted June 22, 2009 Thanks guys for your inputi think i will keep it just for a project as it didnt cost me anything and if nothing else it will help me with my understanding on bikes for future bikes i get the reason i was looking at a different engine was as its a race rep its a big frame not like your average 125.It might be worth trying to bye another Gamma and mixing and matching the best bits, i just brought a haynes basic techbook so hopefully that will help.If you were to transfer bits would that effect the Insurance ? Guest akey Posted June 22, 2009 Posted June 22, 2009 Transfer of bits from an RG125 to RG125 wont affect insurance, although you will have to tell DVLA if you change engines or frames. If you fit bits from another bike or some aftermarket kit you will need to tell your insurance (i.e. if you fit race exhausts or bigger carbs etc). The RG is a nice little bike, but it does have a different frame from the RG250 so you cant do a direct swap.
