Revs too high in neutral

Recommended Posts

Ok, this is a funny one; when I am in neutral the revs go up to about 2500 rpm and sometimes even 2800 rpm, but when I pull the clutch in and put it in gear the revs come down to normal rpm, that is around the 1000 mark.

Now, at first I thought it could be because the clutch was slipping but I really have to release the clutch lever before the bike 'engages', so it is not the clutch, and if it was so, why would the revs be so high when in neutral?

This started about a week or so ago and I don't want to be holding the clutch in the whole time as I could eventually burn it prematurely.

Any ideas anyopne? I have booked it for a diagnostic test on the 17th but I am planning a long trip before that so it would eb nice to have it sorted by next weekend at the latest.

It is a fuel injected machine, so no manual choke or anything. The revs are high from startup whether it is cold or warm. This morning it was normal for a while and then started doing it again.

could be any one of a collection of sensors. the diagnostic should find it pretty quickly especially if you can replicate the fault regularly.

i assume there is no idle speed adjuster if it's fuel injected?

if there is an adjuster it could just be set too high. when you engage gear, the clutch drag would/could then slow the engine down a little. just a thought.

There is an adjuster, but its one of those permanent ones. You have to take the tank off and a few bits and bobs to get to it.
