Guest Posted June 27, 2009 Posted June 27, 2009 Hello allJust new on this forum. I have just bought a 98 GSXR 600 SRAD from a friend. He has had the bike for 3 years and for the last 2 years it wouldnt start. Fault being no spark. He has replaced the wiring loom and the CDI unit or ECU unit. I have my own suspicions what it may be, but I would like some help from you guys on what I should check. Thanks Quote
Pete Posted June 28, 2009 Posted June 28, 2009 Is there any power coming from the battery, does the starter motor turn/try and turn the engine over? If not then I'd have a look at the condition of the battery and check all connections from it first... Quote
Guest Posted June 28, 2009 Posted June 28, 2009 check the followingBattery Starter MotorCoilsin that order.... Quote
Guest akey Posted June 28, 2009 Posted June 28, 2009 First question does it try to start, i.e. starter motor turn the engine? If it does then I would say its either the coils or the HT leads. It may even be just the one coil (if i remember right each coil feeds 2 spark plugs)I am assuming that you have pulled out each plug connected it tried to start the bike to check there is no spark. If you have a multi-meeter you can check the resistance of the primary and secondary coil connections to see if it has broken down or not, you can also check to see if there is a trigger signal on the input leads to the coils, this should help you narrow down the fault. kja.busa Posted June 29, 2009 Posted June 29, 2009 The coils are favourite, it is a weak point on older Suzuki's. Quote
Guest Posted June 29, 2009 Posted June 29, 2009 UPDATEThanks for the replies.I had a wee look at it today, battery is fine, I have even got a car battery with jump leads going to it now. Starter motor is fine too, turning over no problem. Removed the petrol tank and there seems to be a coil on each plug, no HT leads, just a long black thingy with a multiplug with 2 wires on each cylinder. I have removed all 4 spark plugs and plugged them in to the long black thingy, earthed the plugs AND NO SPARK!Any ideas? Quote

Guest akey Posted June 29, 2009 Posted June 29, 2009 Sorry thought this was an older SRAD.Those stick things you refer to are the coils, there is one for each cylinder. Next test I would suggest is attatch a meter to the bike side connection to the coils and see if there is a voltage when you try to run the bike, if not then the fault is further back in the wireing (check fuses etc etc). If there is voltage at the wires then its the coils are gone, but like walney I doubt if all 4 coils would pack in at once, but they might have done.I'm not that good with electrics really so if I couldnt find something with a multi-meter then it would be off the garage with it. Guest Posted June 29, 2009 Posted June 29, 2009 i'd try disconnecting and reconnecting the ECU (Large Black box under the seat with 2 large connectors 6 and 8 wires.. ) either that or the pulse generator coil.. have a look at the wiring diagram on my previous post. these will send the current to the coils at the required interval..did you test the coils independantly with the other three still on plugs in the engine.. and are they seated firmly on the plugs.. kja.busa Posted June 30, 2009 Posted June 30, 2009 All four coils wouldn't go down together, it does depend on how you tested them though, without being there its a tough call what to say. Do you know anyone with the same bike so you could swap components over to try and locate the fault?> Quote
Anthony Posted July 2, 2009 Posted July 2, 2009 definitely try the pulse generator coils, you will need to get a new gasket too tho regards Anthony Quote
Guest Posted July 19, 2009 Posted July 19, 2009 I would like to say a big thank you to everyone who took the time to reply to my post.Just to let you all know it was a broken wire where it passes through the rubber gromit on the spark generator Quote
