Got back from Mikey's run last night and noticed there was quite a strong smell of petrol hanging around the bike. I shifted her into the garage to check a few things over and noticed a little damp patch, no, not from where I was sitting - although it was a very sunny ride home for me! - but just near the centre stand on the left hand side. Dabbed a pinkie in the wet patch and 'twas deffo petrol!

This had dripped from the fuel tank breather tube - now, is that just cos I brimmed her on the way home and I'd gotten a little over-flow or is there something a bit more complicated going on?

Over to you guys...........

could be an overfilled tank or a leaking float valve. most likely a bit of crud on the float valve seat.

switch the fuel off using the tap when not using the bike and see how it goes over the next week or so. it will probably sort itself out. if not.... clean the carb bowls....

I generally get out on the bike 2 or 3 days a week and the odd run at the week ends, would turning the fuel tap off whilst she's sat in the garage for this time help?

Thanks for the advice though! It's all going up here......*taps temple*.....just hope it all stays up there! :D

if you've knowingly brimmed it and overfilled.. i would monitor it and see if it gets worse or happens again, if you have a petrol tap, its best to turn it off when the bike is stored.. just remember to turn it on again when you go for a run..

I wouldn't start hunting for problems just yet..

but if it happens after your next run, then you need to look further..

Had a similar problem with mine...the thingy bob was leaking out of the ojameeflip so we drained it with an ooferdoofer and....

Willow has a leaking pet switch so we changed it (thats what she tried to say).

I'm with the others, if you knowingly brimmed the tank then you may have just got some overflow, as others have said I would just keep an eye on it and maybe switch off the fuel after each run.

All this talk of brimming, overspill and damp patches is a bit much for this time in the morning chaps - let's have a bit of decorum!

To quote dear old Frankie Howerd, "There's no decorum, in the forum!"

Thanks for the technically sound advice there Willow!..........Is there a particular time that you don't mind barking yourself?

I thought it best to get her filled up Frankie........I mean my bike, not Willow!.........for our epic journey home!

I'll give the tap a turn tonight and keep an eye on how she fares.

Mark.....please! You're treading on dangerous ground with a comment about your wife's leaking pet switch......I'm finding it very difficult restraining myself from lots of naughty comments!

Thanks to you all for the advice, very much appreciated! :thumb:

I'm not on the red light yet.. but can't be far off.. 180miles on a tank (17ltrs) isn't bad though..

180 on 17 litres? Not a bad return is it?.....particularly at Ferrybridge's prices!

Ok, going back to overfilling - do I stop just as the juice touches the bottom of where the fuel cap sits? Is it best to leave a bit more of a gap at the top? Should I put it on to reserve and let it run down to nearly empty then put in the volume of juice that the manual says it'll take??

All these questions!?!.........and I'm getting the answers from those in the know!

Fill it until it is about an inch below the neck.. or stick the nozzle in an inch and when it clicks your done...

Hiya,

Awww is she porely?? Answer NOO!!

If your talking about the cb750 then if you filled it up to the brim it does flow out the bottom, I figured that one out when i used to to fill it up too high :)

Don't worry mr, miller it's fine matie

Ragger's xx

P.S You know the bar that's inside the tank that you can see? That's where you fill it up to :)

I used to fill it till you can just get your little finger inside there and not touch the fuel, It is a hard tank to fill on that cos you can't really see how much is in it :)

Hokey dokey - pic to explain...............

I know you'll find this hard to believe.......but I'm not a numpty!.............I can hear you sniggering, you know!

When I said I brimmed her, I only meant up to the flange that the red arrow points at - not right up to the top level with the shiny metal bolts which would end up with me covering my goolies and boots with expensive go-go juice!!!

I take it that the little black doo-dah that the yellow arrow draws your attention to is the fuel tank breather tube opening, I can safely say that the petroleum never gets anywhere near that orifice when I'm squirting it in!

Would it be possible for the juice to find it's way up, across and into the breather tube from the level of that flange?

when your bike leaked had it been raining, could be rain and petrol thats leaked out.. also you have a drain tube on the carbs, so if you've left tap open, it would leak out off there..

It was last Sunday night when I got home after Mikey's Run - about 19:00. There had been no rain and I wasn't going knee down to get the juice moving enough to enter the breather tube.......that's if it could have got up through or between the actual body of the filler cap lock.

I can find no mention of this in my manual but what is that 'hole' at about 6 o' clock, just where the start of the red arrow clears the brushed area?

Could this be responsible for the juice leaking out of the breather tube?

Friday night coming home from work, not raining but was a bit wet under foot, parked up outside my garage and noticed a strong petrol smell again - had a look underneath and again a couple of drops were dribbling out!

Any other ideas?

I don't have a particularly hairy ride home - I'm not scraping the pegs......

Just looking for clues now!

Dunno, just tip the bike and check the overflows are or aren't dripping petrol I suppose. There is a tank breather and two overflow pipes on my Zephyr, one from the fuel filler and one from the tank... plus two breathers off the carbs.

Oh btw it looks like the yellow arrow is the breather hole, the red is the fuel filler overflow.
