Hi guys,

This is my first post in the pitstop section (I think) and I’m hoping to get the benefit of your wisdom if possible. I bought a 1998 Yamaha Fazer 600 in April and its been great but I had a battery issue for a while and hadn’t ridden it for about a month until last weekend. I’ve been out on it a few times since and I think I might be experience some clutch slippage, but I can’t be certain. This is my first bike so I don’t have all that much experience or any point of reference to know for sure.

Anyway, here are the symptoms. When pulling away from a stand still everything is fine. Acceleration is good in first and second, but in 3rd or above, if I’m sitting at about 4 or 5K revs and give it some throttle, it does accelerate well still but I just feel as if the revs are rising faster than the bike is accelerating, it’s a feeling more than anything else, based on the sound of the engine and the revs.

Before I bought the bike, I was nearly put off buying it because the previous owner had described some clutch slippage issues, but he replaced the clutch plates and told me that in the end he’d put it down to an adjustment issue.

Based on what I’ve described do you think my clutch is shot or that I need to do some adjustments or that I’m making something up in my head based on the fact that the previous owner had similar issues.

Any thoughts would be gratefully received. I would just like to get an idea before I end up spending money taking it somewhere only to find there is nothing wrong.

Thanks

Interesting!...

I've a 1999 Suzuki GSX600F and thought I might be having clutch slippage issues a while back. Basically I have the same 'symptoms' that you're getting. I thought I'd leave it but then heard a clicking noise which turned out not to be the clutch. Anyway, I did get all my clutch plates and springs out and checked them thoroughly, no problem (like I said, turned out the other clicking problem wasn't to do with my clutch).

Even when I'm out riding now I'll open the throttle up in 3rd or 4th (or 5th or 6th...anything above 1st and 2nd really!) like you say and there's a delay before the bike 'wakes up'. When it gets to around 7,000 it suddenly kicks into action and away I go. It can be an arse when overtaking people because I'll sometimes have to kick it down a couple of gears to get in the right rev range.

I've just put it down to being a trait of an inline 4 engine and not having much pulling power until the higher revs. I shouldn't worry about it. Although I do know that I'll be going for a V-twin with my next bike!

have a look in pitstop for clutch adjustment posts, you should have a few mm of free play, lever movement without taking up slack,

adjust at lever for small adjustments, if out of adjustment at lever, then wind in fully and edjust at other end then fine tune at lever end..

you could probably do with lubing the cable it might be sticking inside..

Thanks guys. I'm going to have a play with free play adjustment tonight. It has quite a bit already though. I am at the end of adjustment at the lever end though, so I'll have a go at the other end to see if I can sort anything.

I do know that the inline 4 engine in my fzs pulls best after about 7k revs but it still feels a bit odd. I reckon my best bet is to get someone who knows bikes to ride it or just take it in to a workshop and get it looked at.

Don't get it looked at! Well, I suppose some people don't like fiddling with bikes, but if it were me I'd fiddle until it were all fixed (probably after breaking about 5 other things in the process, but it's all part of the learning curve!)!

Just checked the freeplay in mine out of interest and it's supposed to be between 10-15mm and was over an inch at about 30mm!! Woopsa daisy! I might invest in a new clutch cable anyway, I'd be very interested to see if it has been sticking and leaving the clutch open slightly, thus the drop in performance.

Good luck with it then mate whatever you decide to do with it (DIY or mechanic). Let us know what happens, and thanks again Frankie, prooving yet again to be a useful man to have around!

Incidentally does anyone know where to get a cable lubing tool from? For my lubing task I'm going to flush the cable out with paraffin or WD-40 first and then use either motor oil or dry film lube but...how are you supposed to go about getting it in there!?

Nice one! Nearly bought one of ebay for £11 quid!

EDIT: Just found lots on ebay after seaching for "cable oiler" that're cheaper than £11 :D
