ugenmzs Posted July 8, 2009 Posted July 8, 2009 Any advice on the following would be appreciated:Cleaning Painted surfaces: I have noticed that small hairline scratches are appearing on my painted surfaces and was wondering if this is due to the type of materials I am using, which are: initially a sponge - until I heard that they arent recommended and now a cotton mitt to wash and household cotton yellow duster to polish (I use Autoglym wax). Any tips on this or other cleaning stuff would be appreciated!Cheers Quote
Pete Posted July 8, 2009 Posted July 8, 2009 Make sure that whatever you're using to clean it (i.e. sponge or cotton mitt) hasn't got any dirt or grit on it. Sounds obvious but it's easy to miss a few specs of grit that will add loads of scratches to the paint.Autoglym wax is a good choice. If there aren't too many scratches then you could use T-cut scratch remover, but don't use it everytime you wash. It'll only remove small scratches that you can't feel when you run a finger nail over them. It works by 'moving the surface paint around' to fill the gaps and I've had good experiences with it, but if you use it too much it can thin the paint. Best thing to do is sort out where the scratches are initially coming from.If it's a new paint job you should really leave it at least 3 days to a week before cleaning it or doing anything to it to give the paint time to set and go hard. But this is probably irrelevant to your bike?If you want a really, really good finish to the paint then I've heard good things about Maguires Clay Kit. It's not particularly cheap but everyone that I know that's used it has been very impressed. Quote

(use a brush for the engine) Quote
