I’ve been riding in sturdy walking boots for a while, but I’m planning on getting myself some proper biking boots this weekend and wondered if anyone had any recommendations. I’ve had a quick search of the forum for similar threads but didn’t find anything that answers my questions.

To try and narrow down the options I’ll provide a bit of info.

I ride a Yamaha Fazer 600. My riding is a mixture of city riding and recreational riding out on the twisties and some motorway too. I wear textile gear, not leathers and as I am fairly new to bikes, I don’t push things too much, so I’m guessing I don’t need a race boot.

Ideally I’m looking for a boot that will be suitable in all weathers (if that’s possible) and will still look ok to walk around in when I get to whatever my destination is.

I don’t really know what my price range is. I don’t want to spend loads but also don’t want to compromise on the level of protection that the boots will give.

Any recommendations would be great, cheers………..

I have TCX (used to be oxtar) goretex boots, and would reccomend them.

Also worth looking at Alt-Burg if you like walking style boots, but you will have to wait for them as they are handmade, but they are some of the best boots available.

Cheers guys,

Some options to be looking at there! Good range of prices and styles too! I like the look of the TCX boots!

Ebay ebay ebay ebay ebay!! I won some Sidi Black Rain boots off ebay the other day for £47 (sorry anyone reading this is the person I pipped at the post in the last 4 seconds ;) ) and they are really fantastic. Sidi are an excellent make and I'd go along with the Vertigo suggestions as well, however the Black Rain are superb because they are guaranteed to be waterproof, oh and they are oh so comfortable to walk around in. I used to have a pair of Nitro something or others and they were stiff as old boots (wahey!), but in the Sidi's I feel as comfy as a tart with knee-highs on 8-)

and he'd know, its his Sunday best......

I have Nitro boots and find them more than suitable, not tight, but i have smaller calves (Calfs..sp) than SP.... not guaranteed waterproof, but then water gets in the top of all boots..

if you buy them though get a can of wd40 at the same time as they all squeek like mad!!

I must say about the Nitro boots that they do FEEL very sturdy. The Sidi ones are a much softer material (lorica I think, not leather, but looks like it and is waterproof). With the softness of the Sidi's I can walk for hours in them whereas in the Nitro's they'd be abit stiff...though I did walk up a massive great huge hill in mine :? I don't want to sound bad about the Nitros, infact for the money you'd pay they're great. Mine only let water into the one boot and the other one only got wet from sweat! The Sidis are breathable (well so is a Goretex jacket, but only compared to a bin bag), and I'm yet to see how much I sweat in them. One "bad thing" about the Black Rain is that they don't have much play in them if you do have smaller calves/calfes/lower leg bits so if you have skinny legs then you might feel they move a bit. The Nitros have more velcro area so can be tightened more.

I'm talking myself into liking my Nitros again here!

Sunday best - yeah that's right! I only ever wear my red leather knee-highs on a Sunday, along with a strappy top whilst on my pink scooter.

Good quality commando boots. 10 hole. Wax makes them water proof.

Walking boots don't come up high enough to protect your ankle from abrasion injuries.

The boot you pick should fit snuggly to stop it coming off and to hold your bones together in the event of an off.

See the case studies in this section. 8-)

I've got some Oxtar (which I guess are now TCX), they're really comfy, waterproof, look good, but bloody hell the creaking drives me mad - I sound like the bed in a Honeymoon suite that's getting some serious wedding night action everytime I walk to my bike!!

Alpinestars SMX-4 Waterproof. Very comfortable and still in the same condition as when I bought them a year or so ago. (And I've worn them a fair bit)

Come in loads of colours as well. I have black but I've always kinda liked the camo ones.

Bullson Maddox.

Cheap (as far as bike boots go), good protection. I never get cold feet even when the rest of me is cold! They're not over-hot in the summer either.

Also, you can walk round in them without looking like a Transformer  They're black leather, very unobtrusive.

I got mine from Hein Gericke - just go to their website and search for "bullson maddox".

Lol! I just think that some of the boots out there look like something out of Transformers, with all the angled plastic and bolts and what-not!

You've obviously never danced with a robot, Colin. They've all got two left feet...
