Pete Posted July 15, 2009 Posted July 15, 2009 (edited) I have a removable helmet liner and it's starting to pong a bit. Having never cleaned it before and ridden with it for the past year it's no surprise (through winter too!). I hear there are many fabled ways to accomplish the task, yet I have not put any of them to the test. I've heard of getting the liner out, hand washing it wish hand soap and leaving it to air dry. Oh and even putting the lining in the dishwasher as it doesn't get chucked around too much like that...though I'd be worried about the caustic nature of dish washer salts, etc. What're the opinions of the sages amongst you? Guest akey Posted July 15, 2009 Posted July 15, 2009 I put mine through the washing machine on a gentle wash with some tea towels and stuff, works fine, slow spin then let air dry.If you cant remove the liner then wash the inside of the helmet with a shower head and baby shampoo then let air dry. Guest Posted July 15, 2009 Posted July 15, 2009 after the posts on here i cleaned mine in the shower with shampoo, not baby as suggested, didn't have any, and left to dry on a towel near, but not on a radiator, job done, no pong... just have a good hold as you dont want to drop it or smack it on the taps.. its easier to be in the bath with it, but thats means getting wet.. MtotheJ Posted July 16, 2009 Posted July 16, 2009 I have read in a magazine that you dont even have to take the linign out if you dont want to (although must make it a lot easier). You can literally just dunk it in a bucket of water and it says to use baby shampoo (not rally sure how this is different from normal shampoo though) to massage in to the lining, dunk again and then dry. I should really do mine... Quote
TC Posted July 16, 2009 Posted July 16, 2009 I wear i thin Balacalva all year round, keeps my ear plugs in place and just throw it in the washing machine when you get back from ride. Quote
Colin the Bear Posted July 16, 2009 Posted July 16, 2009 A silk underhelmet works great on all sorts of levels. I find my helmet doesn't get so smelly since I don't have hair. Perhaps my head is cleaner Try a No2.Can't write anymore the innuendo filter on my PC has started smoking. Quote
Pete Posted July 16, 2009 Author Posted July 16, 2009 Colin, "try a No2" - You rub poo into your helmet? I'm sure I've read somewhere that doing that can have a negative affect I'm in the process of doing a dry run with one of my helmets (the one I let pillions use, not me in case it goes wrong ). I got a washing up bowl, put a tablet thingy in it that you put in the washing machine (Fairy was the brand I think) and filled it with warm water. Then I squelched my removable liner about for about 5 minutes, rinsed it under a cold tap and now it's on the line drying off nicely. Incidentally did you all know that Daz washing powder does actually make your whites whiter? The only downside/reason for this is that it's because it has ultra violet cleaning agents in it so will attract wasps and other creepy crawleys Quote
Guest Mr Miller Posted July 16, 2009 Posted July 16, 2009 Can't write anymore the innuendo filter on my PC has started smoking. I'm with Colin on this one but Pete, how the feck do you do a dry run on washing your liner?......I've tried loads of different ways but can't get 'Dry Cleaning' into an acceptable joke-format!Plus, I'm still chuckling at Frankie whacking his helmet on the taps.....mind you, I suppose he is only short!
