I've been accumulating some nice gortex gear and I just got myself a good lid seeing as I have my CBT and a 125 available, I'm booking my DAS really soon and I'm completely comitted to getting a proper bike in the near future. 'Sorted' I thought, but then I thought about my spine in a crash, surely it's a very flimsy thing ready to be destroyed by a car or a curb in an accident, so I thought I'd look into a good back protector.

I've read the "buying a back protector?" sticky and had a look at a few product specific threads but I want to get a few opinions on back protectors in general. I've heard some people say very matter-of-factly that they'll do more harm than good in a big crash, and I've heard other people say that they consider them to be as important as a helmet when riding. I'd like sopme thoughts on this sort of gear. Any particular ones I should avoid? Any recommendations?

hi hywel

i got knocked off my bike and landed flat on my back, but i didn't even feel it because of my back protector. won't go on the bike without it now :)

i've got a knox (not the roll up one). brothers girlfriend has a forcefield and says it's v comfy and she feels secure in it.

Hi Mate

I would recommend the Knox Contour. I have one and like it. Lot's of others on here wear one as well and they all like them.

I have also heard very good things about the Forcefield Back Protectors. Worth a look mate.

Just remember to take your bike gear with you when you go to try one on.... Don't want to be in a situation where you have blown £100 on a back protector and you can't zip your jacket up while wearing it..... :D

Yep, knox contour for me too pal. Can`t seem to see how they would do more harm in an off though ???

Got a knox contour myself got it just after I passed my cbt got hit by a car 3 months later, but not a spot of damage to my back (much to the surprise and disbelief of the doc's who x-rayed my back 3 times before looking at my broken arse), So I'd highly reccomend getting one just make sure it fits good.

oh and the plate sruvived too and is still in use :)

Another one for the Knox Contour club here! Like nman I also can't see how this particular back protector would cause more damage. It's quite low-profile and fits very snugly. After a while I don't even notice it's there anymore.

Thanks everyone, I think it's a done deal for the knox contour, I'll go and try one on this week! Can't beat a sales pitch like Chimera's.
