Restriction of ZZR1100 - Other than by Carb tops

I have a ZZR1100C [ 1992 ] that I am trying to get back on the road. The bike is a foreign import. Has anyone come across them being restricted in any other way than by carb tops to stop the slides coming fully out. If it is a Jap market inport does anyone know how they are restricted for that market. eg via CDI unit or other means with it being a non uk bike?

This bike has flat carb tops but wont rev in gear over 7k rpm. When u change gear you are fine again but only up to 7k rpm and so on. I have had the carbs off cleaned them + fluel lines filters and removed the air filter and made no effect.

Any help appreciated

can't find any mention of other restrictions but have found reference to an identicle fault on a ZX9r which may help. both the zx9r and zzr1100 have a roughly similar ram air system. if the ram air system leaks then revs under load can be resticted as you describe.

http://www.cornwallkawasaki.co.uk/shop/shop.php?cmd=showdiagram&id=3818 here is an exploded view of the air intake system.

one area to look really closely at is the ram air link to the carb float bowls. it is needed to ensure the correct pressure within the carbs. the ignition system is still worth a check too.

i should of asked, is the bike generally intact or do you have the fairing off and are you running in standard spec or is it being street fightered or modified?

Is the bike from Japan?

Because if its from Germany for example, or I think Switzerland too, it could be restricted to 100bhp.

Also Californian models are restricted too.

Unfortunately I have no idea how they are restricted.

the only restriction kit i can find is for a ZZR400 which uses steel washers on the intake manifold but that still wouldn't limit the revs until trying to go flat out in 6th. i really think its a fault causing the revs to top out at 7k

BTW - the carb top restriction only stops the throttle sliders moving past ~90% fully open. my bike is restricted (to 125bhp  ) still revs perfectly ok to the red line though

Hi, will the engine rev past 7k out of gear? if not, then its got to be restricted via the C.D.I - ingnitor unit. You should be able to get a uk spec replacement easy, must be loads in the breakers.

Note this engine is just getting onto the cam at this speed, after this the fun starts

Hope you get it sorted.

ps, drop me a line if you have'nt sorted it, i've got some very good kawasaki contacts

Hi have tried a different cdi and still wont rev properly out of gear. When u ride it on the road it feels as if it is restricted gets up to 7k ok and then feels like it has been choked off. The engine revs change and the thrust that u get with these flattens out. If u hold the throttle open it continues to rev up to about 9k but the accelleration stopped at 7k

Any help from your contacts welcome. It has unregulated carb tops

Have you had a look at the ZZR International Forum? Its a real nest of info - i've got a 1991 600 D2 that i'm putting back on the road and its been fantastic for technical stuff.

You'll have to google it though as its bad form to link directly to another forum from here......

MK5 dont post the full linkl, drop the WWW. then its not a link... as it doesn't go blue/underlined,

or as OSS do, replace the "a" in Ebay with an "*", so ebay becomes eb*y, most people can figure out to change it back...
