Hey everyone!!

I'm hoping to spend a couple of Sunday evening hours with my beloved.....bike.

Dan's chain cleaning guide is awesome and I'm going to give the bike a good spruce up, but I was going to use WD40 to clean the chain, then lube it up and let the scottoiler take over maintenance until the next cleaning sesh. BUT, I've read online today that WD40 is a no no because it has a bad effect on the lube afterwards. That true? I was planning on using WD to clean other parts of the bike though. That's no problem is it (just no moving parts)?

If I can't use WD on the chain, what can I use that I may just have around the house?

Parrafin mate. If you haven't got any, you can get it from any diy store, normally in the outside gardening bit. Cheap too.

i would stick with parafin as dan has said and wash it off properly, but if you have to use WD40 then make sure you wash thouroughly after, the only thing i have used inthe past is mr sheene lol and made sure i washed it after, worked a treat

Cheers guys,

Well, turns out I'd forgotten some household DIY tasks that I've been assigned to, so now the kids are getting down to bed I have to get on with those....guess I'll do the bike tomorrow!! Hope the weather's still fine when I get down to it!

parrafin of a proper chain cleaner from a bike shop

WD40 is penetrating and will get by the seals and wash away any oil/grease in the chain it can also perish some rubber seals too

Oh! I've always used WD and an electric toothbrush because I find it works better than parrafin! In fact I do just as you've described - WD to clean, wipe off excess, add chain lube then let scottoiler take over. Never had any problems and didn't think there would be because WD is very light oil and ends up being flung off the bike by the time I get to the top of the road anyway! That said I do tend to go for a quick five minute ride after the WD stage before I put the lube on, just to get the chain warmed up.

i did mine today and everytime i clean the bike

i spray WD40 on the chain, one side at a time and clean all the dirt off with a rag, i then do the other side, then the bike is usually washed, if its not then i run the chain through a cloth to dry and finish cleaning the chain, by this time its all gold and sparkling :) i then start up the bike and starting from the visible side/near side, i spray castrol lube onto the chain (while in gear) i then do the seals and other face of the chain, making sure its covered with a thin layer of lube. goes from gold to white, looks like the shop floor ones

Never had any rust or problems, no seized parts or over worn stretching, chain has been on there for over 3000 miles and has only been adjusted twice over a distance of less then 2mm :)

i cleaned my chain for the first time in 3000 miles the other day...

I bought some Motul Chain cleaner. great stuff. Just spay on and rub away with an old t shirt or the rough side of a sponge for stubborn stuff. Also good for getting around nooks and crannies around the sprocet to give them a clean too :)
