bmw r45 - dead ignition start button brake light on

BMW R45 - 1979

Hi

Been working on an old 'airhead' - new battery - all back together - turn on ignition - all warning lights correct - BUT

press ignition start button - nothing dead but brake light comes on - not even click at relay - any ideas

to turn brake light off i have to detach front brake handlebar lever switch connection

please advise

thanx for response

took off and cleaned handlebar ignition starter - no difference

THEN JUST A HUNCH - i pulled in the clutch lever and the ignition worked

any ideas wots wrong

clutch safety switch, have you got wires under the lever,? fitted to Suzuki's I have had...

Some bikes have a clutch sensor so you can start the bike in gear. Might be worth checking it's wired the right way round. Apart from the clutch switch it may be the neutral switch.(Bike thinks it's in gear so won't let you start it till you pull the clutch) Usual thing to check when the starter doesn't work is , kill switch , side stand and in neutral. Some need the clutch lever in as well.


After reading again, the brake light is probably the lever switch or the pedal switch 8-)
