Guest Posted August 31, 2009 Posted August 31, 2009 Hello Guys,Just wondering if anyone can help out though I'm not a mechanically mind person Started my bike yesterday first time with no problems, left it running whilst I checked tyre pressures and swithched off after approx 5 mins. Went inside got gear on then back outside to restart whilst finished my cig.Bike fires up first time and ticks over fine, sit on bike ready to put helmet on, rev's drop a little so apply a little choke and then bike cut's out and wont restart.Since buying the bike, It's been serviced, due to a backfire issue the carbs where stripped balanced, week or two later had a low battery problem, that was briefly charged via a car battery and everything has been great until yesterday.Fuel tank taken off and strainer cleaned, but still won't start, turns over great, try's initially then nothing.Rob. Colin the Bear Posted August 31, 2009 Posted August 31, 2009 Is there fuel in the tank? Engine kill switch? If the engine has been running for several minutes applying the choke will flood it. Too much petrol wets the spark plugs and inhibits spark. Choke is for cold starting. After checking the fuel. Take the plugs out and clean them. Quote
Guest Posted August 31, 2009 Posted August 31, 2009 Thanks Colin,There is a full tank of fuel.Have tried the Kill switch, Flicked it to kill and tried wont start, flicked back and triesWith over 24 hours since this problem occurred would the excess fuel not evaporate ?, though i supose with re-trying to start, more fuels been added.Rob. Both a charger and on car, but with no revs...Engine tries to start, but won't, nor will it with a new Yuasa battery.Rob. Quote

Plugs in are Iridium'sRob. Quote
Stu Posted August 31, 2009 Posted August 31, 2009 the wet indicates that fuel is getting through try removing them both clean them up and while your at it check for a spark to check for spark put the plug in the plug cap and hold it against the engine preferably with a pair of insulated pliers!! Bill_on_a_bike Posted August 31, 2009 Posted August 31, 2009 It turning it over fast enough? Making a fast enough wizzing noise when you hit the button? Just wondered if your battery was a tad low again. Odd for it not to start V easily once hot like that though. Quote
Guest Posted September 4, 2009 Posted September 4, 2009 Update:Still not running, Plugs have been taken out and cleaned, then replaced with a new set, Battery full charged. More than happy to listen to any ideas.Rob. Quote
Pete Posted September 4, 2009 Posted September 4, 2009 - Does it try and start but just doesn't quite get there? Try blipping the throttle a bit to give it an initial bit of juice. Also take the clutch in so there's less resistance.- Try semi-bumping it. You probably won't bump a V-twin with pistons the size of your head but make it cough and it could be the kick up the arse it needs. Get on, turn ignition to on, kick it up to 2nd gear and keep clutch held in. Get someone to push you along (your mum or girlfriend works well - or use a hill to roll down...just get them to push you back up) and slowly let the clutch out. If that doesn't get it going (like I said it probably won't) kick it back into neutral and try and start it from the button.- Check the fuel petcock. Shouldn't make any difference with a full tank but make sure it's set to ON.- Turn off all lights, heated grips, any electrical shit you might have plugged in at the time. Having lights switched on takes power away from the starter motor. Also, if you have a battery charger like an Optimate fitted then leave it connected when you try and start it up then when it's running unplug it.- Before trying to turn it over turn the choke on FULLY. You should do this anyway if you're going to use the choke. I never turn the choke to halfway. When it fires up and over revs just turn it down until it's at about 2,000 while it warms up. After a couple of minutes shut the choke off fully. Like others have said if you turn the choke up while it's running it'll flood the engine.Hope that helps. Quote
stedan Posted September 4, 2009 Posted September 4, 2009 Might be a silly question Rob, but it is in Neutral isn't it? Quote
Guest Posted September 5, 2009 Posted September 5, 2009 Will try your idea's later Pete. When trying to start, it is almost there, but just appears to lack that final bit of whatever it requires, I've now have it on the abba stand, have have tried it, then hit the kill button and tried, obviously it's doesn't turn. All lights have been off, side stand down and up, well doesn't go completely down on the stand.Stedan....Yes mate,it's in neutral.I'm working this morning, when i get home it's time to lean to strip a bike.Would damp cause the problem, Like i said earlier on, it's living outside with a cover at the moment?Rob. Colin the Bear Posted September 5, 2009 Posted September 5, 2009 then hit the kill button and tried, Quote
Mightycaz Posted September 5, 2009 Posted September 5, 2009 I had this problem when i first got my bike, the starter motor turned over but it wouldn't fire. The dealer got a mechanic to come out and have a look, When he tried to start it with a power unit attached it started everytime but as soon as the unit was taken off it still didnt work so it was taken back to the dealers for them to have a good look at. Turned out to be a faulty relay between the battery and starter motor which only cost £2.50. Dont know if this is any help but for such a cheap part it can't do any harm giving it a try! Quote
Guest Posted September 5, 2009 Posted September 5, 2009 then hit the kill button and tried, The engine turns over with the Kill switch off, so by hitting the kill switch the engine Doesn't turn, thus hopefully proving that the kill switch isnt the problem. Quote
Guest Posted September 6, 2009 Posted September 6, 2009 Well thankfully it's now running again...Poxy Esso fuel was off, we've just dropped the tank and the fuel was all cloudy. A mate just been over and tweaked and fettled a few things and now she's signing like a bird, a very throaty bird Rob. Quote
