mojobanana Posted September 4, 2009 Posted September 4, 2009 I've been looking at getting a set of soft panniers for the bike. I've seen some in shops and I'm not sure how you secure them to the bike... do you just put the straps underneath the cowl/pillion seat? Is there a way to stop them flapping about when you're on the move? I've got an SV650s if that helps. Only want them now and again so don't really want to shell out for hard luggage. Quote
duane69 Posted September 4, 2009 Posted September 4, 2009 Hi, if this helps i've got panniers and a tail pack and if i can fit it all in the tail pack i don't bother with the panniers.there are velcro straps that go under the seat and you can buy non slip mats from pound shop to stop them rubbing your paint work. I prefer the tail pack Quote
Colin the Bear Posted September 4, 2009 Posted September 4, 2009 It depends what sort and how big. Throw over panniers are just that. For bigger ones support bars need fitting to keep them out of the back wheel and to anchor them. Quote
jman1978 Posted September 4, 2009 Posted September 4, 2009 I've got a set of oxford soft panniers, usually attach them with a couple of bungy cords under the seat. old bike used to have some nice helpful points to attach them too. Quote
Guest Posted September 4, 2009 Posted September 4, 2009 velcro strap undre and 2 over the seat, bungee to pillion footrests to stop them lifting and bungees at rear.. had mine ages, and work well.. just a pain getting the seat lock key in with them there..put something down just in case they rub/scratch.. old towel with a cut out for the seat lock.. Pete Posted September 4, 2009 Posted September 4, 2009 Same as everyone else has said really, make sure you put some non-slip matting/towel down so you don't scratch the paintwork. With mine I have 2 velcro straps and a nylon strap and buckle in the middle. I put the nylon one under the seat and the two velcro ones over it. A mate of mine gets a bit cocky when he sees me attaching it like that saying "they're throwovers, not UNDERS you nob...", but as long as they're secure it doesn't matter. Mine have a loop underneath each one that I've put bungy cord through. I then wrap one end 'round the pillion footrest/whatever looks sturdy, and wrap the other end 'round some metal bit on the other side after going under the tail (leaving clearance for the wheel to bounce around). I'd take a picture but they're not on at the minute and I'm getting the bike ready to sell. I've covered about 4000 miles with them on in total and not had one problem with that method. Quote
Stu Posted September 4, 2009 Posted September 4, 2009 you have just missed a bargain i just got a set of oxford humpback soft paaniers off fazer pete for £32 posted they have the velcro straps for under and over seat and 4 other straps to secure them elsewhere Quote
mojobanana Posted September 4, 2009 Author Posted September 4, 2009 Thanks folks, feel a bit happier about getting a set now. You can get that non-slip matting in B&Q for a couple of quid a roll, so sounds like that's worth an invest as well. I use a rucksack atm, with my tent and sleepy bag bungeed to the pillion seat. I've taken the pillion pegs off, but the bracket's still there on one side and the other is an exhaust hanger so plenty of places to secure them to Quote
Guest Posted September 10, 2009 Posted September 10, 2009 wait until your at an event and then borrow someones to see how they fit...... yep, mojo and GarethNW both had concerns about panniers, both were quashed with practical demo of how they fit, and the mis-conception that they will fowl on the Exhaust... even on a GPZ500s, and the SV650,.. Stu Posted September 10, 2009 Posted September 10, 2009 i had concerns about panniers not been secure all them was quashed when i rode back from pennies with them attached (vicki took them in car for me ) at speeds of *30 mph they never budged and i didnt even know they was there!!! Quote

Guest philgale Posted September 11, 2009 Posted September 11, 2009 mojo, you should of said something over the weekend i had panniers on my bike.most panniers will come with a few small straps to strap to pillion pegs (but you aint got any) i strapped mine to the zorst hanger and the frame on the other side and then just strap the very back together and thats it.... Guest Posted September 11, 2009 Posted September 11, 2009 Phil, we fitted mine to both Mojo and Gareths bikes, so they could see how they fit.. now they just need to get some.... Quote
mojobanana Posted September 11, 2009 Author Posted September 11, 2009 Yep, I shoved Frankie's (EDIT: panniers) on my bike, and had a look at TC's too. Just PM'd Techno on his offer. I had been looking on ebay for a set, but wasn't in any hurry to buy as I probably won't be needing them till next Spring. I refuse to do camping after September But if someone's got a set they don't want... Quote
