Hi, he took it in for the MOT, said he wished he'd worn a nappy because a Police van came towards him in the opposite direction as he was riding to the MOT garage and he almost void his bowels. He said he just kept looking straight ahead thinking, "Act casual. Don't look suspicious. Whatever you do, don't throttle it if they turn around." Thanks for all the advice.
-
Oh, I see what you're saying. Still it is very confusing, even the police website says you can ride to a pre-booked MOT without a current MOT or TAX as long as you have insurance, but if insurance is invalid without an MOT then technically you're not insured, so you can't ride it to an MOT because you don't have insurance, even though you do have insurance. Am I just making things more complicated than they need to be lol.
-
So he can't ride it to a pre-booked MOT? is that what you mean. If that is the case, aside from trying to find a van to take it, is there any insurance that does specifically allow to ride to pre-booked MOT?
-
Hi, My friend is getting his bike back out but it is currently SORN, no TAX or MOT. Everything I can find online says you can ride your bike to a pre-booked MOT without an MOT or TAX. He has got insurance but the policy says not valid without MOT - Catch 22 situation. Do you need specific insurance for riding to MOT without a current MOT? - Or is all insurance fine as long as you are going to a pre-booked MOT. Very confusing. Thanks.

I had the same idea and bought a cheap puller set off amazon: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B000LFVPYE The largest of the set worked a treat and I managed to get the assembly off the shaft very easily. Replaced the clutch with a new one, and now my scooter runs and the wheel turns great. I'm so happy, you can only imagine the smile on my face when I finally got it up and running again. I'm the happiest man alive right now, seeing that back wheel spin when I pulled the throttle was better than watching my first child being born All fixed. Thanks for all your help everyone.
-
Sadly not, I've looked through it already. As I say the entire clutch body spins freely, I can take the bell cap off, but the main spring body won't come off. It's not jammed or anything, I just can't seem to pull it off the driveshaft. As far as I know there are no cog type bits on that part of the shaft, that part of the shaft is flat and smooth, so I'm not sure why it's stuck. Driving me crazy.
-
Okay, I got the variator off no problem, and then I moved on to the clutch. The clutch bell came off no problem, but the rest of the assembly won't come off the shaft. I've spent all day pulling, wiggling, giving it a little hammering, praying, begging, and it just won't come off. Any ideas please? - How can I get this thing off
-
No, the wheel moves freely by hand. If I turn the clutch bell with my hand the wheel spins with it, same as if I spin the wheel by hand, the clutch bell spins with the wheel, spinning the wheel makes the clutch bell turn faster than if turning the clutch bell to turn the wheel... if that makes sense.

Hi, Seen as my other problem of engine not starting after scooter being sat for 2 years has been solved, thank you so much, I figured a new topic was best for my new problem. Engine now turns over perfectly on first hit of ignition switch, however, when I turn the throttle the engine revs nicely, but nothing happens, the rear wheel doesn't spin. This morning I took the CVT cover off and observed the following: Belt is not worn down and tension is good Variator spins rapidly when engine starts - and the belt is spinning with it I can spin the clutch by hand and the rear wheel moves with it So at first glance it doesn't appear like anything is stuck, (image not of my CVT as forgot to take a pic before putting the cover back on) While on the center stand, when I pull the throttle the scooter feels like it wants to move, I can feel some force trying to move the scooter, even though the wheel isn't on the ground, if that makes sense. I couldn't do any further inspection because I don't have the right tools to take the variator/clutch off (ordering tools today). I tried leaving the engine running for a little while, about 20 minutes, as someone suggested it may need to warm up a little, but now running low on fuel so had to stop doing that for now and it made no difference. When the tools come tomorrow I can see if the weights maybe need replacing, I'm just going by what I've seen in youtube videos because I'm no mechanic. But while I'm waiting for the tools to come, can anyone make any suggestions as to what the issue could be, so that I can check tomorrow and go through a check-list. Really appreciate your help all.

But won't leaving it idling for that long cause damage?

Now what?!? Okay, I managed to get my scooter up and running, turns out it was the stator, but now I have another problem. Scooter now turns over first time hitting the starter button, all good, idle's just fine, I was so happy when I finally heard the engine going again. I gave it some throttle and I can hear the engine revving, but the back wheel isn't moving. I can move it freely by hand, I've checked the CVT belt and it is fine, I'm not an expert but there's no corrosion, and tension is good. What could be the problem now? Just to recap, the scooter was working perfectly fine before left sitting for a few years, hasn't been punished by the elements as has been stored indoors.

I tried everything that you suggested, its still not firing up. I have a feeling it may be ignition coil, I took the boot out and tried a couple of old spark plugs in it (no idea if they're good or not) and didn't see any spark when I hit the ignition. I didn't want to take the new spark plug out that I fitted this morning because it was so fiddly and took ages to get it in, but I've ordered some more, as well as a new ignition coil and will test those tomorrow, see if I have any luck. If I'm still not getting any spark, do you reckon it could be the stator? I'm not sure what else it could be, I've cleaned the carb, checked all my wires are in place, has fresh fuel, new oil, a fully charged battery, when I hit the ignition everything lights up and it sounds like its firing up but the engine just doesn't want to start - though I did get a very faint whiff of exhaust fumes from time to time. The scooter has been sat indoors in my hallway the entire time so it hasn't been exposed to bad weather or anything.

Hi, I have the Sym Jet 4 125 scooter, sadly it has been sat for about 3 years doing nothing for various reasons, lock-downs, health. However, I've been wanting to get it back out on the road, I've checked all the breaks, done all my oil changes, installed a new battery, drained and changed the petrol, but when I try to start it, it sounds like its trying to kick over but never quite gets there. The solenoid is triggering (not clicking like its dead) seems to be working fine, but the scooter just won't start. I haven't removed/cleaned the carburetor yet, that's next on my list, maybe its clogged or something and hopefully that will fix it. But figured I'd get a head start just in case that doesn't solve the problem. Any ideas of what I could check to find the problem? Thanks

How Do you Protect your Bike?
maxrpg replied to Francesco's topic in Clothing, Luggage, Accessories and Security
Sorry for posting in a old thread. This looks pretty good, however, if it is a "One Push.." lock, and I'm assuming that means you just push it in to lock it, then what happens if some little scrote rides by and decides to give the lock a kick when you're either stationary at lights, or worse, slowly on the move, so you can't go anywhere while they get their crowbars out and nick your keys and bike? -
Using a helmet camera with a Bluetooth headset
maxrpg replied to Beans's topic in Clothing, Luggage, Accessories and Security
I considered using a headset but then thought what was the point, most cameras have a built in microphone and you don't need headphones/earpiece to hear your own voice. If its clear voice recording you're after then I'd just get a microphone stuck on the front/inside the helmet near your mouth. The reason I chose not to get headphones/earpiece is because (A) depending on its size it would squash my ear when putting the helmet on and (B) it would just distract me. When wearing a (full face) helmet all sound is directed in front of you already making it a little hard to orientate yourself and judge what's coming behind and to the sides of you, having something on my ear would make it worse for me lol -
Do you think the law should change to tackle thieves and idiots?
maxrpg replied to maxrpg's topic in Motorbike Chat
I completely agree with this. I read a story a while back about the police ramming a prolific thief off a stolen scooter and after doing his best superman impersonation flying through the air he landed on the road and died. It really upset me seeing the mess all over the road, I cried, I was so upset I almost set up a gofundme page. It was a sad and tragic loss seeing that poor scooter in pieces all over the road I wanted to help with the cost of repairs. -
Do you think the law should change to tackle thieves and idiots?
maxrpg replied to maxrpg's topic in Motorbike Chat
My idea around the helmet code is just to have another way of identifying the rider. Police can check if a bike is all insured, mot'd and taxed but the thief could happily ride around all day long because it will probably be ignored by the police until its been reported stolen. Lets say when you register your bike with DVLA they send you out a sticker with a unique rider code on it that you stick to the back of your helmet, when the police do their checks it will show insurance, mot, tax and rider code if the rider code doesn't match then that person should not be riding that bike. I'm sure they'll be some thieves out there that would but most don't steal helmets or be bothered to carry around a printing machine to duplicate a riders helmet code before they steal the bike. -
Hi, I'm sick and tired of young idiots riding scooters and bikes around like complete idiots and all these bike thefts. Most of the idiots are on scooters with L plates, saw one almost knock a toddler over as he crossed the road with his mum, I gave him a piece of my mind ...he gave me a piece of his in the form of a finger. But should rules/law change to add additional requirements for learner riders? I was thinking force ALL learner riders to not only display L plates but also require that they wear a full yellow hi-viz vest at all times while riding. This would not only annoy the chavs and probably stop most of them riding around like lunatics because they don't want to look stupid in front of their mates by having to wear a vest and make thieves easier for the police to spot but also make law abiding learners more visible on the roads and make them safer. Not wearing a vest? get pulled over. Why isn't there a better way to identify if the person riding the bike has a CBT/Licence and is the owner of the bike. Obviously this is done in the form of police doing random stops etc but if they see a bike/scooter going down the road they're looking at and checking the bike not the rider. Police use ANPR to check if a bike is MOT'd, Insured and Taxed but what if you could check the rider as well. This is probably a stupid idea but what if all riders had "licence plates" as well as the vehicle, more of an ID code. Possibly a short unique alphanumeric rider code displayed on the back of their helmet and the code is registered with the licence plate to identify that the person riding the bike is the legal owner, a sort of 2-facto authentication check. It's too easy for thieves to take bikes/scooters even if you lock it up like fort know if a thief want's to take the bike they will take the bike. A thief walks up to a bike wearing full riding gear and carrying a helmet and unless the owner or someone who knows the owner is nearby then the rest of the public wouldn't look twice, he's wearing all the gear so why wouldn't they assume its their bike as he covertly breaks the lock and rides off. The thief can pass several police cars as he rides away but the only checks done are on the bike, which has valid insurance/mot and tax so the police ignore it unaware that he's not the owner because it hasn't yet been reported stolen. But if there was a way to identify the rider like what I said above then the police would have gone "Hang on, the riders code doesn't match. Let's pull him over and have a chat." instead of just ignoring it. These are probably silly ideas but I just feel that something needs to change because I feel that bike/scooter riders are getting a bad reputation because of the idiots and thieves. Any thoughts? - what do you think could be done to tackle it?

Happens more on way home from work and could be right about the tyres not warming up but suppose it could also be grease on the roads in places, work in town centre so loads of traffic and construction vehicles about. I'm thinking of taking it in to a garage so they can give it a full checking over. First MOT is due in December so may be worth having it checked before then anyway and make sure everything is as it should be. Unsure if its slipping/sliding related but thought I was going to die on my way home this afternoon. Bloody wind blew me in to the oncoming lane, its like I had no control of the scooter what-so-ever when the gust of wind pounded me from the left side.

Hi again, SYM Jet 4 125cc Scooter Recently, say the last 3 days riding my scooter I've felt my back end slipping/sliding mainly when turning corners. Now I don't ride at high speeds and have always slowed down when turning corners and this has never happened to me before. It feels really weird and scary at times as I can feel the back end slip which makes my heart jump as it feels like the back end of the scooter its about to slip and give me a closer look at the tarmac...if you know what I mean. It has been only a slight very brief slip/slide but more than enough to have me concerned. I've checked the back tyre and its not loose, pressure and treads seem fine. Any thoughts and what it could be please?

Thanks for the replies. The sound seems to have gone now, haven't heard it in a couple of days. Hopefully it was nothing serious and whatever it was has sorted itself out. Weird.

Hi, For the last 3-4 days when I finish riding my scooter (Sym Jet 4 125cc) and turn the engine off I've heard a weird sort of clunk sound when the engine turns off. The first time I heard it I thought something had fallen off my bike but didn't see anything and thought nothing of it but it now happens every time I switch off the engine. This hasn't happened before now and not sure how to describe the sound, its like 2 bits of metal knocking against each other. Scenario just be clear is I ride my scooter, come to a complete stop for parking, turn key to switch off engine, engine stops and I hear a clunk noise. My scooter itself is still working perfectly fine its just this noise that's suddenly started.

The scooter and battery was sitting doing nothing for a couple of months until 2 weeks ago when I started using it and a friend told me its a good idea to keep the battery in good condition by giving it a charge every month or so. So I got a charger on Friday and thought I'd give it a charge. The charger does say it is suitable for motorcycle/scooter batteries
-
Hi all, Been using my scooter for a couple of weeks and thought I should give the battery a charge before I take it out in the morning but I'm confused with what is happening. The charger I have is this one from AUTOXEL: http://autoxel.com/index.php?m=Home&c=Products&a=detail&id=3 The battery I have is: PTX4L-BS Powerline Motorcycle Battery 12V 4Ah AGM Technology When I connect it to the charger I leave it on the default selection (Normal 12v/3.8A) and it blinks the charge percentage lights and it always seems to go to 100% within a few seconds. I’ve been using my bike for a few weeks so don’t understand how the battery can still be at 100% charge. Am I using the charger wrong? Thank you.

We bought a Sym Jet 4 125 that the original owner had taken apart and he sold it because he no longer had the time to put it back together. We've managed to put it back together and it runs really well but we're missing some screws and don't know the size needed.
