oldsoul Posted October 2, 2009 Posted October 2, 2009 hi all question about is semi-synth oil is API sl better than theAPI SG or SG (what haynes says for my st1100 pan)it's all 10W-40 and it is bike oil and can it be used in my honda jazz 1400 sports?thanks Quote
Hoody Posted October 2, 2009 Posted October 2, 2009 Use what the manufacturers manual says.In the bike only use bike specific oil particularly.Car oils have different compositions and will cause clutch slip if used in a bike. Bike oils are generally more expensive so don't use in the car.Follow manufacturers manual for the car recommended oil. Quote
Colin the Bear Posted October 2, 2009 Posted October 2, 2009 Synthetic oil can take more of a beating in the engine before it starts to break down. So suitable for very high reving engines. It lasts longer and so you know you're getting full protection for vehicles with longer service intervals. Semi synthetic is just that. Half and half. Synthetic fortified has some added.Bikes usually have a wet clutch. This means the clutch is in the engine oil. The clingy non slip additives that work so well to protect your engine will also adhere to the clutch. A slippy clutch is useless. Why deny your car the advantages of this additive. Quote
Pete Posted October 2, 2009 Posted October 2, 2009 I'd always stick with semi-synth, never fully unless it's going into a bike with a dry clutch. Fully synth is more likely to give clutch slip (particularly on a new clutch). Fully synth is fine for cars and Ducatis, but I wouldn't use it in any other bike. Some people do and get away with it, but clutch slip is more likely to happen. The API rating (i.e. SL or SG, etc.) is better the higher the second letter. The manual will recommend something like SE, SF or SG, the higher up the alphabet the better. It's a minimum guide (so if you took your bike to India where some of the oil is rated worse than pee for sticking in your engine!). Therefore API SL is better than SG, because SG is the manufacturer's minimum recommendation for your bike.To be honest pretty much any oil you buy in the UK will be of a perfectly adequate quality. Also check for the JASO marking on the back which denotes that it's good for motorcycle use. Quote
