asharin Posted October 14, 2009 Posted October 14, 2009 After my recent accident, I need to fork seals redone, and some new handlebars. I would also like to replace the front tyre, but that's not so vital...yet. What would you consider a reasonable cost inc labour, to get the seals done and handlebars replaced? At a garage I mean I don't have to tools to do them myself right now (nor the knowledge)Last time I ended up paying £148 which I thought was a tad excessive, especially as they didn't do the job properly....won't be using them again! Hoody Posted October 14, 2009 Posted October 14, 2009 If you think the tyre needs replacing then it will need replacing. Between that and fork seals make them the priority, not handle bars.Budget £80-120 for fork seals dependant on machine, £100-140 for front tyre, same again for rear tyre and for 'bars - depends what machine, renthals for example, including fitting - about £80 - 120.Enjoy! Guest Posted October 14, 2009 Posted October 14, 2009 Thanks for the help guys.Looks like I'll be bikeless a few months then!get the bars and change them yourself, its an easy job with minimal tools. if you were nearer, i'd sort your fork seals out.. Quote
asharin Posted October 14, 2009 Author Posted October 14, 2009 Yeah don't really mind doing the bars myself so much, I assume it's a case of undo the bolts on the switches/grips and they just pull off? then take the bars off and put new on and replace switchgear? Quote

Remove mirrors, remove bar ends if fittedundo the switchgear (Electrics), undo clutch lever and cable, do nut adjust the adjuster except to get the gap in a line.. (cable run), disconnect front brake connectors from brake switch.undo brake master cylinder (bit that holds brake onto bars..) slide off Throttle..leaving all cables intact (helps if you move the bars to the left...)remove bars (towel on the tank to stop any scratches)take left grip off bars (will be tight... insert a thin screwdriver and spray with WD40..then twist...) take off clutch perch (bit that holds lever..)fit perch and grip to new bars, bars to bike, then add throttle, and everything else... check clutch lever works as it should (remembering to turn the adjuster to lock..)that brake works and lights up the rear light, and that throttle snaps back to stop.. also turn bars lock to lock (full left-right) to check for cable snagging and catching on tank.. asharin Posted October 14, 2009 Author Posted October 14, 2009 Right...I'll get someone else to do it then! I'd probably break it Quote
Guest Posted October 14, 2009 Posted October 14, 2009 nah, its a doddle... just take your time, and put a towel on the tank, you'll figure it out as you go along... I can swap a set of bars in about 20mins.. Quote
Colin the Bear Posted October 14, 2009 Posted October 14, 2009 First thing to get is a manual. Haynes go through everything, step by step, with pictures. It will help you work out what tools you need before you start. Start your collection. Do what you can and get the rest done for you. Over time your skills will increase. Now't like that fixed it myself feeling. If it's going to take months for you to save up for spanner fees, what have you got to lose? Quote
asharin Posted October 14, 2009 Author Posted October 14, 2009 I've had a haynes manual since a week before I got the bike, it helped when I sorted the sidestand switch etc. I'm just a bit down at the moment, I was even thinking about not bothering with biking anymore but I know I'd miss it. I'm still tempted to just sell the bike as spares or repairs and get a different one, lost confidence in it. Quote
Guest Posted October 14, 2009 Posted October 14, 2009 There is no handbook for the Pan European ST1300 Quote
asharin Posted October 15, 2009 Author Posted October 15, 2009 Well, the bikes in for repairs on Sat, getting them to redo the fork seals, and check out the brakes while they are at it.The handlebars I will do myself, as for wanting a new tyre..well it doesn't NEED one, i'd just rather it had a batter tyre, but that will have to wait until next month I'll be broke for this month after fixing, god knows how I'll afford anything for the MOT next month... asharin Posted October 19, 2009 Author Posted October 19, 2009 Updates: The garage that did my seals last time are morons. They didn't even take the forks apart properly and forced the old seals out with a screwdriver, tearing up the forks as they did so, which of course led to the new seals (that they probably also forced in with a screwdriver) being torn up fast.I'm having a repair done, but short of new forks (or part of) or rechroming, it's only a temporary repair at best. It's still less than my excess so not making an insurance claim, no point losing NCB.Oh well, as long as it lasts until february, I can probably afford a new(used) bike then Still pissed about the way I was charged for a bodge job before though :/ Quote

The people that did the original work(?lol) were a garage though, in Lymington, not going to name and shame just yet though. Not sure it's worth going to trading standards over, after all, it's my word vs thiers, what's to stop them saying it happened after they had it?I'll just chalk it up to experience, and never use them again...however, as the guy that runs the garage is my Boss' brother in law, I might use some blackmail there Apparently the boss went white when he heard I had crashed due to the forks....(it was him that suggestec the garage when they needed doing) Quote
