Sooo, I pulled into a petrol station and filled up. Pulled out in first and as soon as i changed up to second the chain came off.

My question is, why did it happen?

I've left my bike at the petrol station (locked up in the back, the guy at the counter was really nice) and i'll hopefully get it put back on tomorrow

 chain needed adjusting months ago, too slack and your change up has jerked the chain off the sprocket,

you need to check your bike on a regular basis and carry out routine maintenace, get a Haynes manual and sit down for some reading.

wonder what else has been overlooked since your ownership.... :|

Totally With Colin and the rest on this one, how you managed to ride it to the point that the chain came off on a road bike beggers belief. Count yourself very very lucky it happened when it did.

Think of what could of happened if it had come off whilst you were in top gear on a busy road  Chain off, rapped around your back wheel locking it up, your a lucky lad!

The other side is the chain snapping smashing the engine casing and taking a lump out of your foot "not a nice thought".

And yes over the years l have seen and heard of all these things happening.

Sorry for the lecture matey, but you really was that lucky.

Do ya checks
