where to start

i want to get an old junker and do it up BUT i have no mechanical experience at all so don't even know the basics


can anyone recommend a good book (or several) to get me up to speed with the terminology, i can easy strip a bike back to it skeleton but that doesn't mean ill know how it works if you get my drift.


any help much appreciated


just incase your curious my objective is I want to get into custom bike construction but don't have the time to do a course.

find a bike that works is a good start, but needs some tinker time, and get a Haynes manual..


all of my projects have been rolling chassis (wheels and frame) its a good place to start from..


and get one with a fully working engine, then you can work on the other bits, like brakes, forks, body, drive, electrical, etc,


and above all make sure its cheap,

thanks for the advice, its much apreciated,


iv been looking at a few bikes but cant seem to find any on ebay for less than around £300 (none or barely working) should i expect this? when you say cheap what kind of price range do you think i should be looking at? sorry for the dumb questions but as i said, i have no clue :)
