Ingah Posted August 9, 2010 Posted August 9, 2010 2 in 1 here - not sure whether it's strictly bike related, but i've got to post somewhere I'm looking to make my (rented) garage more useful as a workshop (it's currently not exactly an exciting place). Currently it's just got wooden beams on the walls filled with a few cheap tools and loads of sprays/oils etc (have to lug the heavy toolboxes of Halfords Pro stuff up there every time i go out). Hence i'm considering investing in the titled items (DAB radios and a work bench, maybe a chair too so i can sit down to work on my forks seals etc).Regarding DAB radios, does anyone have any recommendations (including the idea not to get one / yet and/or get an FM one instead, as i'm all for future proofing, but DAB were still expensive last year) - i need something cheap (so i can afford to replace it if i ever have any unwanted midnight guests ) and battery operated as there's no electricity supply in there. Apart from that, i've no idea what additional features these things can have, and hence doubt i'd need them Edit: On further investigation, it seems that DAB radios are still reasonably expensive even on Amazon etc, so never mind for now - i'll have to pick one up when they become a bit cheaper.Regarding a workbench - anyone have any ideas of what i could need features wise, or even a recommendation (cheap again taking precedence). Or am i best to simply loot an old fire door from the tip and then prop it up on bricks (and hope it doesn't fall down because i'm pretty pants at making things) I'd also appreciate it if anyone could share where they get their "workshop bits" (as i think of things like this) from. Obviously Halfords could do most of it, but i don't believe in paying through the nose any more. Quote
Guest Posted August 10, 2010 Posted August 10, 2010 Pete Made hisviewtopic.php?f=2&t=22616&start=0&hilit=workbenchas RobJam has an old pine dining table going spare i'm going to modify that to make a workbench, give it a top layer like Pete has that can be removed/replaced..workshop tools we accumulate over time, listening to the radio the other week, DAB is over hyped as most stations aren't even broadcasting from it... Phill_vtr Posted August 10, 2010 Posted August 10, 2010 I made a workbench from an old pine kitchen table that the previous owners left in the house. Wedged it in a corner and put some brackets on the wall to hold it still.I got a cheap DAB radio from Asda or Tesco but will be moving my old stereo into the garage and connecting an ipod to it. The cheap one doesn't go loud enough to sufficiently annoy the neighbours Quote
Guest Posted August 10, 2010 Posted August 10, 2010 Personally I'd just leave a pair of battery powered speakers in the garage and plug in an MP3 player when you're there. I wasn't impressed by DAB when I tried it, poor reception and horrible sound quality even with a good signal.I bought my garage work benches from B&Q, they did a smallish, but sturdy, pine one, and I joined 3 of them together to make a single long bench that occupies most of the back wall.
