Guest Posted September 20, 2010 Posted September 20, 2010 My bike needs its 7500mile service. having gone over that milage by 300 it needs doing. still unsure if i should take it to a garage to do or buy a haynes manual and the stuff needed and ask a friend to help out servicing it. bikes only 2 years old and has been serviced by a dealer since it was new. i want to keep the value of the bike up. how much would they normally charge to service it ? its only a little bike really obviosuly the offical honda dealer will be expensive but how much ? just wondering if its worth taking to the dealers to keep its full service history. it hasent been serviced but its allready had new tyres, oil change, brake fluid top up, chain adjusted so im half way there already would it be possible to get the things that need servicing like the spark plugs cleaned/ changed or is a service a service and they check and change evreything on the list ? Guest Posted September 20, 2010 Posted September 20, 2010 Hi i had the oil changed after a disaster involving CAR OIL which most people on here will remember i had the oil changed and put in some decent Castrol oil. i didnt clean the oil strainer though. i also had the brake fluid topped upThe chain has been tightenedThe brakes lights i know work as i check them oftenbrake pads have plenty left on themthe clutch lever has play in at the released end. quiet a lot actually. i checked it and its not the cable its the lever that the cable attaches to inside the clutch. its annoying as i dont often realese the lever fully beacuse i know there is play there.i could ring the honda dealer about costs but dont want to sound like a idiot on the phone. Guest Posted September 20, 2010 Posted September 20, 2010 Nah you wont sound like an idiot. Take the calliper off and give it a clean as well. And adjust the clutch so the free play is a bit better (or according to the manual)Its up to you if you want to pay for the official service or not tbh! Quote
Guest Posted September 20, 2010 Posted September 20, 2010 if i adjust it to stop the freeplay i get a clutch slip effect above 8000rpm. i think the problem is with the lever that attaches to the inside of the clutch.is the service normally under £100 ? Quote
Guest Posted September 20, 2010 Posted September 20, 2010 Well there should be a small amount of play (that is, 2 or so mm where by you pull the clutch and its only tightening the wire, not moving anything) this is needed, as you then know the clutch if fully engaged. You'll probably find a 7500 mile service more like £150 ish, depending on your garage. Mine + mot came to over £200 Quote
Ingah Posted September 20, 2010 Posted September 20, 2010 Official dealer could be around double what it costs for an independant (i think Honda dealers tend to be £60/hr + VAT, and independents are often £30/hr + VAT, or less if you can find a one-man band). Personally, if i were looking to retain the value and prepared to pay extra to do so, i'd consider getting an independent garage to do it and stamp the book with their stamp. Sure, it might be worth slightly less to some buyers than the "official" stamp, but the amount that'd save over a few services should be far more than the "lost" value! (assuming you can find someone willing to pay more for full dealer service history, over full garage service history). Note: Using an independent garage with a qualified mechanic should not affect the warranty, whatever the dealers try to suggest!Better still (providing you're careful and thorough) home service it, and save a packet! Note: This may well void the warranty for whatever you've done if you're not a qualified mechanic, and will reduce the value, however, the amount of cash saved is far far greater. And if you do, KEEP THE RECEIPTS! (if you can keep it organised so it's easy for a buyer to see that it's all been done at the correct time they should be happy even if it's not done by a garage - i.e. mark the receipts for oils etc with the date, mileage etc, and try to buy all the bits together on one receipt and/or staple the receipts for 1 service together)"Full service history" is good enough for me, i can't see why people should pay much more for a second hand bike simply based on where it's been serviced (unless of course it's been serviced at a known "bad" garage), as a full service is a full service, no matter how many qualifications the mechanic has. Guest Posted September 20, 2010 Posted September 20, 2010 think il home service it not paying silly amounts of money for a stupid stamp in the book. already kept one reciept of the oil i bought to change the oil but didnt note down the milage. only problem is iv done 300miles more than i should of done but couldnt afford to get it serviced then.
