T3hscott Posted March 8, 2011 Posted March 8, 2011 Hey guysOk so i am looking at getting my first bike and i am after a yamaha Thundercat. I have found one which is very reasonably priced and has very good mileage for the year. in the description of the bike it states that the "Engine and gearbox are spot on, although the clutch is starting to slip". I have asked him about this and how much he thinks it would cost to rectify the situation and his reply was this "The clutch is about £45 for a pattern replacement plus about £10 for a gasket, this is seperate to the gearbox which is fine"I am bascially just wondering if this information is correct or if there is anything else that could help or that would need to be considered if the clutch is indeed slipping.many thanks guys Quote
Guest Posted March 8, 2011 Posted March 8, 2011 the clutch friction plates wil have worn away and you probably want a full kit replacing the springs, the friction plates and steel plates. look about online many online shops will sell kits for the bike.EBC are a good make. the Original plates and springs will probably be more than a aftermarket one Quote
T3hscott Posted March 8, 2011 Author Posted March 8, 2011 i did find a kit online actually just googled it out of curiosity and there were two options one was1) EBC CK Series Clutch Plate Kit - £58.492) EBC CK Series Clutch Plate Kit & CSK Spring Kit - £67.99am not the most mechanic minded person so i aint got a clue what the difference is besides one comes with springs :Sany chance you could explain if you know?? Guest Posted March 8, 2011 Posted March 8, 2011 you probably want new springs as they will have worn over time and can cause the slip but most probably the friction plates worn. still best to replace the lot and have a new clutchdoes the kit with springs contain both the steel plates and friction plates ?i would get the one with springs. the last thing you want to do is to replace it all and then it still slips beacuse of worn springs.when i changed my clutch the most annoying and time consuming bit was removing the old gasket. the actual change of the plates took a few minutes. BoB3rt Posted March 9, 2011 Posted March 9, 2011 What is required in a clutch change? can it be done from the side of the bike or does it require pulling the bike to bits? i assume this would depend on the bike however lets say it was for a thundercat ? Quote
Guest Posted March 9, 2011 Posted March 9, 2011 most can be done from one side i think. you have to remove the cover and gasket first though Quote
eastanglianbiker Posted March 9, 2011 Posted March 9, 2011 clutch change all done from behind the big case on right hand side of the engine just need to drain oil first and get new gasket and oil to rebuild. Quote
BoB3rt Posted March 9, 2011 Posted March 9, 2011 So its not such a big job then... about £100 and few hours with a couple of people who know what there doing.and a haynes manual Quote
Guest Posted March 9, 2011 Posted March 9, 2011 it seems like a big job but its not really.you have to drain the oil, then remove the cranckase cover and the gasket. then undo the bolts on the clutch. then you pull the plates out and replace them putting them back in the right order, add new springs if needed then tighten the clutch back up clean up the surface where the old gasket has been and then refit new gasket and cranckcase cover. then add engine oilyou will need a torque wrench for this though. if you just do the cranckase bolts up without a torque wrench it can cause all sorts of problems like warping the cover and oil leaking etc. i think it can damage the engine aswell Quote
