thunderbird 900 misfire

ive started to notice a misfire or flat spot at about 2500 to 3000 revs in all gears. i have stripped out the airbox and found that the air filter is soaked in an oily petrol residue. however testing the bike without the filter the misfire/flatspot is more pronounced. the bike is a very low mileage (7000) 2002 model that ive had for about 2 years. so i suppose its about time i serviced her. does anyone think that i should strip the carbs or will a simple filter change with a new set of plugs suffice? thanks in advance for any advice.

hi and welcome to the forum if you plan on sticking around pop into new bies and introduce yourself if the bike is that low mileage it might benefit from a service including all the usual bits and pieces and might also need the valve clearances doing

thanks for your input. but now that the bike is running 100% better i dont think that i have to worry about the valve clearances just yet. it is such an improvement that i suspect that it was showing symptoms when i bought it and that i rode around it until it became noticeable. so a simple service, that is fluids filters and sparklers cured it. however it wasnt a simple proceedure as the airbox has got to be in the running for the worst design (clarkson voiceover) in the world!

so are there any suggestions out to improve the accessability of the airbox. it currently has a k and n panel filter fitted. i would even consider junking the whole assembly and fitting 3 seperate k and n's. thanks again in advance.
