Ricky Posted June 18, 2013 Posted June 18, 2013 First off I'd like to apologise for any bad spelling, grammar etc, I'm on my phone Secondly, I don't know where this would topic would go.To the problem, my bike as some of you know is basically f*cked and I took it to the garage and they said its going to need a new engine. He's come to this conclusion without even stripping the engine just by listening to it, lolwut?!He said it'll cost 600 with fitting. And if he was to rebuild it it'd cost 900 I mean where do these figures come from 0.oDoes that sound about right or am I bring screwed? The thread with what happened is here;viewtopic.php?f=5&t=48121The video is in the comments further down, thanks for you time guys and gals Quote
eastanglianbiker Posted June 18, 2013 Posted June 18, 2013 well the cost of 600 plus fitting will be what he is paying for the 2nd hand engine and delivery charge and any other bits and pieces that it will need like oil then labour charge to fit it all in and make sure it runs ok,the 900 will come from cost of parts from yamaha and then labour charges to strip and rebuild your engine as that has extra hours involved in it,of course you could also sorce the engine yourself and remove old engine and fit new one yourself to save on costs Quote

He's not stripped it? Quote
eastanglianbiker Posted June 18, 2013 Posted June 18, 2013 if you ran it dry of oil and it seized up then any good mechanic will know what it needs,it will need the crankshaft rebuilding to replace the big end shell it will need all new bearings in the engine/gearbox it will need piston and possibly barrel it will need the head rebuilding.that is the kind of damage running out of oil does it doesnt only hurt the engine but it hurts your pocket as well Quote

eastanglianbiker Posted June 18, 2013 Posted June 18, 2013 when it is meant to hold how much oil? minimum of 1 litre i would of said maybe more so it was almost dry of oil the pump wouldnt of been able to pick up the oil to push it round the engine Quote

When I put my finger over the spark plug hole it still blew my finger off the hole.Sorry, I think I'm grasping at straws but I think my bike is absolutely f*cked and I can't afford the 600 it needs so unless I win this weeks lottery I won't be biking for a long, long, long time. eastanglianbiker Posted June 18, 2013 Posted June 18, 2013 only thing you can do then is put back the bits you have removed top it up with oil and see how it runs and if the engine smokes a lot or knocks Quote
Ricky Posted June 18, 2013 Author Posted June 18, 2013 I've put oil in it and there's still nothing from it, there's a video on that thread I linked to above with the sound it makes, it's a hard one to describe:( Quote
eastanglianbiker Posted June 18, 2013 Posted June 18, 2013 yep thats dead as dead can be crankshaft bearing knocking there is an 2012 engine on ebay buy it now for 300 quid Quote
Ricky Posted June 18, 2013 Author Posted June 18, 2013 Right well now that's cleared out the way How hard is it to replace an engine?Like do I have to notify the DVLA, change the v5 etc or is it as 'simple' as taking out the old and in with the new? Quote
eastanglianbiker Posted June 18, 2013 Posted June 18, 2013 out with the old in with the new then you are meant to update your v5 with new engine number so v5 needs to be sent off and just engine number replaced on it just make sure that any engine bought has some kind of warranty on it that it is a good running engine so you dont buy one just like yours even a 28 day warranty is good enough and plenty of time to get them swapped in the frame Quote
