Hi Guys / Gals,

I've been reading through posts about bike comms as I want to get something set up for touring (bike to bike as opposed to rider to pillion) After reading through posts I've almost handed over the readies (something I don't have much of) for a set of 800m BT Interphone head sets (£50 quid plus post) which seems an absolute bargain. I've heard a few stories of issues but the support for the product seems to be great, in terms of software up dates replacement of faulty units etc.

However, I'm a little unsure how its going to work while we're travelling around Europe. I've read other people have used them in France etc but I'm a little concerned as to whether or not I'm going to end up receiving a big phone bill when I get home...

I'm assuming that for bike to bike communication you aren't actually making a call just using them as an intercom...? But, is keeping the device connected to the phone and therefore the phone will be on all the time going to cause roaming charges or anything? Last time I was abroad I came home to a £450 phone bill, Not funny! Perhaps I'm being paranoid but if anyone could put my mind at rest regarding the use of these in other European countries and any pitfalls I might need to know about, it would be very much appreciated!

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer ;-)

Hi Mate, the interphone works by radio contact between the 2 head sets no need to make a phone call. As it say's up to 800m metre between the headsets. You just press a button on the head set to com the other head set. Sat nav and your mobile phone connect to the headset via blue technology. l've just opened the box to the 1000m units it will pair up multiple headset great if it works, will keep you posted. Little Cat already has your system l'm sure she will along to give you a low down. There already a link running on these units if you search.

Hi Chris, Cheers for the info mate. I wasn't sure if it was using the two phones to connect bike to bike. Do you know if you can use bike to bike mode without a phone paired to it?

Posted

Yes you can, you don't need to pair them to anything apart from each other if you don't want to. They talk directly to each other rather than it being a phone call.

I have mine connected to my phone as my phone's the SatNav but when the SatNav instructions come through it actively cuts off the bike to bike channel to let the phone back in.

Will the 1000's pair to the 800's then Chris? That would be interesting to find out.

Not sure Mate l'll let you know, this one suppose to be able to pair up to 5 riders :shh: Have to say we are very sceptical at the moment due to the price but they do look OK, the other systems we looked at were least £200.00 more  Batteries are on charge at the moment l will complete the install later.

Question Mate, how did you get on fitting the speakers my helmet is a fairly tight fit, these speakers look like there going to be uncomfortable. If needs be l'll have to do a mod and fit my inear units.

I got on alright but my speakers have ended up just in front of my ears rather than flush over them. I've got a decent recess in my lid there that they're sat in, more or less on the front corner of the bit the straps attach to.

Cat had quite a bit more fiddling to get them in the right place than I did, I think they're at least half under the lining in hers to get them in the right place.

mine still aren't sat quite right, my left ear kills after a bit, and getting my helmet back off definitely hurts, need to fiddle around a bit more....maybe I just have huge ears :P.

regrettably not had the chance to try them abroad yet ( not a hint or anything )

but for the couple them for so far, they've been brilliant, really impressed with the clarity, even in quite high winds this last weekend.

as ohjay says you don't need to have them paired to the phone at all , ( you can if you want but don't need to for intercom purposes)

Hi Cath well that's where l am at the moment, my Shark helmet has a very shallow recess for the ears, on fitting the supplied speakers units the helmet become tight and painful, come the warm weather on a long ride this will be a no no. As l see at the moment my only option is to fit a small jack plug to allow me to use my in ear phones which have been fine so far. Only issue is that l might screw the warranty doing this. Life it's never easy

mate, try moving them forward so they sit in front of your ears instead of over them...this worked for me ( except I still need to fiddle a bit with the left ), even if they end up under the lining you shouldn't have a problem hearing them ( I have a severe hearing impairment and can still manage with them half under the padding , as long as I have the volume turned all the way up )

Hi Cath the whole point of the exercise of changing from a wired system to a blue tooth system was to get rid of the arsing about togging up. I've tried to run with helmet speakers before the sounds fine but l've always encountered tight spots with the helmets l have after fitting. "having a big head doesn't help lol" . I will see if l can get a additional mike - speaker loom and modify it, will keep you posted

and i'll let you know how I get on with repositioning mine :)

then all we need to do is have a rideout to see if you can indeed pair them all together :D

Here's a cheaper version:

I hope I'm allowed to quote that URL... :?

While I've seen this subject:

If I buy this BT intercom, can I chat with people who have different brands of Bluetooth comms? Or can I only chat with other BT users?

That's exactly the one we've got but there's only one in that pack, not a pair :)
