mini quad starting issues

hi guys

Not exactly bike related.. more mini quad bike..

i got my son a mini quad for his birthday in march, and had no end of issues with it..

from day one... it ran for about 20mins, then the coil pack exploded.. So i replaced that..

she ran again.. for about 10mins.. until the con rod snapped!!!

So engines being cheap, i bought another.. this came last week.. so i put it in, as i had my little boy this weekend..

Went up garage, 5 litres of fuel, 100ml of 2 stroke oil added, giving 50:1 mix..

it started first pull, but after 5 mins, died out and wont start again..

so.. there is spark.. holding the plug against the engine, it sparks fine, but to be sure.. i put an NGK plug in there..

but still not starting..

So i went to the carb.. stripped it, cleaned it out, put it back on.. NOTHING..

fuel in getting into the carb, and filling up the bowl fine.. But WILL NOT START...

I then went through a list, crossing everything off...

reset coil gap.. CHECK

Replaced petcock (as these are known to be terrible), but no change..

I checked all engine bolts, including head bolts. to make sure its not leaking compression.. but nothing..

the wierd thing is.. at first.. when the piston came up to TDC for compression.. it of course went stiff, and took some pulling to get it to turn, (this is when it was starting fine)..

but now... there is still a bit of stiffness in the chord when its at TDC, but with one firm pull, i can fully rotate the engine just fine..

where as it wouldnt before..

any ideas??

its doing my head in.. and my little boy is impatient, he barely played on it!

cheers

quick query guys

Got my son this weekend, went up garage and got 4L of petrol in can.. Mixed 80ml of 2t oil to it, giving it a 50:1 mix...

since the quad has been sat for a couple of weeks, i opened the carb up, cleaned it out with carb cleaner.. removing jets etc..

put some petrol in, started first pull..

So loaded the quad into the car and took him to our local mini dirt track.

Arrived, it started up first pull again, and idled lovely while i was putting my sons helmet and protection on..

He rode away fine, 5 mins later, it died again, and wouldnt start..

opened the carb to find the jet was blocked with green jelly.. (the 2t oil is green)...

but question of the story is...... It gunked up and blocked that quickly???

while it was running!!!!!

WTF!!!

Does cheap 2t oil have a tendancy to do this? as it is cheap stuff.. just my local garage stuff..

its green coloured, mineral oil, branded COMMA....

ive heard of carbs gunking from being sat for a while.. but not within 5mins, and while running...

Sounds more like it could of been formiing in the pipe from tank to carb and the fresh fuel washed it down into carb

hi EAB..

the fuel line has a filter on it, and shows no signs of any gunking up at all..

also, pulling the pipe off, and emptying the tank shows no signs of gunk either..

very wierd..

I was speaking to a neighbour earlier this evening, and they said that some 2T oils dont like to be directly mixed in fuel, especially cheaper ones,

is this correct? and could this be the case??

its extremely baffling how its running fine for 5mins, then blocked jet with green gunk..

yeah tell me about it.. ive had plenty of 2 stroke toys, aswell as a 2 stroke pre-mix strimmer too..

And never had an issue..

But this F**ing quad bike is doing my nut in..

My little boy gets so excited about going on it, every weekend ive got him.. and everytime, it starts up lovely in the garden, but as soon as we take it out to local fields, or junior dirt track, it messes about..
