fitting new fuel filter to my virago 535 and a new alarm

hi guys my bike has the full tank not the dummy with the tank under the seat so has 2 pipes running under seat over top of battery so has no fuel tap the problem i having is stopping petrol peeing out when i try to remove the old filter even after clamping both long pipes under seat do i have to drain the top tank before swapping filters also has anyone fitted the hawk x50 bike alarm to this bike if so any hints and tips would e a great help before i start cos the info i got with it is a bit vague and confusing i have fitted a basic hawk alarm before with no probs but that was a few years ago but this one is a bit more advanced
