Cam93 Posted September 18, 2018 Posted September 18, 2018 As the title says really. I’m not very tech savvy but would like something to browse on, watch films on and occasionally work on if I need to work but don’t fancy going to the office.I assume I need to buy Microsoft office as a separate item as well as some kind of anti virus? Anything else I need to be aware of?Looking for somthibg decent sized, e.g 14 inches but open to all suggestions as I say - I’m not very savvy! All I do know is, I don’t fancy Apple prices! Quote
Fozzie Posted September 18, 2018 Posted September 18, 2018 Oh, can I jump in this thread and make it efficient? Same as above, but with light gaming too, £400-£600 budget. Quote
Arwen Posted September 18, 2018 Posted September 18, 2018 If you don't need a lot of storage - https://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/lenovo-v330-intel-core-i5-8250u-8gb-256gb-ssd-15.6-inch-windows-10-laptop-81ax00cbuk/version.asp https://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/computing/laptops/laptops/hp-pavilion-pro-14-bf054sa-14-laptop-silver-10164462-pdt.html if you need lots of storage (at the cost of speed)https://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/grade-a1-asus-vivobook-core-i7-7500u-8gb-1tb-dvd-rw-15.6-inch-windows-10-77514202-1-x541ua-go799t/version.asphttps://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/computing/laptops/laptops/dell-inspiron-15-5000-15-6-intel-core-i5-laptop-2-tb-hdd-silver-10181483-pdt.htmlGaming, what sort of gaming? In most cases I would simply say get a desktop, but if pushed, then this isn't too bad. Possibly a bit chunky thoughhttps://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/medion-erazer-p7647-core-i5-7200u-8gb-1tb-geforce-gtx-950m-17.3-inch-window-30023352/version.aspThis would be a whole lot better, but out of your budget... https://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/asus-rog-core-i5-8300h-8gb-1tb-256gb-ssd-geforce-gtx-1050-15.6-inch-windo-fx504gd-e4278t/version.aspFor casual, not intenstive games this maybe work too https://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/computing/laptops/laptops/hp-pavilion-pro-14-bf054sa-14-laptop-silver-10164462-pdt.html To look at laptops yourself, find the processor type - get an intel i5 or i7. the code after the i5 or i7 referes to the generation. Newest generation is 8. For laptops there was massive improvements in gen 7 and 8 so I would stick too those generations. If you want speed more than storage, get an SSD hard drive. Don't get a 128gb one though, it's too small. 256gb is the min i would recommend to anyone. For RAM, at least 8gb regardless of how you are going to use it, the more the better. However in most laptops it is pretty easy to upgrade at a later date. Feel free to post some links of laptops you want "evaluating" before purchase. Quote
Guest Posted September 19, 2018 Posted September 19, 2018 And you don't need separate anti virus, what comes with W10 is quite adequate. And if you do put separate AV software on it, it is quite possible to create conflicts that will bog your machine right down. Quote
