The ties between Moto Guzzi and Italian aviation are well known: Carlo Guzzi and his partner and sponsor Giorgio Parodi met during their World War I military service in the Italian navy’s aviation branch, and the spread-winged eagle of the Moto Guzzi crest is a direct reference to their shared experience.

With its 100th anniversary, Moto Guzzi has dug deeply into company history and drawn inspiration from the lives of the founders. We see part of that history celebrated here: A special V100 Mandello model inspired by Guzzi’s and Parodi’s connection to Italian naval fliers, and also by the latest jet in the Italian navy’s inventory, Lockheed Martin’s F-35B Lightning II, arguably the most advanced multirole aircraft in the world today.

The Moto Guzzi V100 Mandello Aviazione Navale was unveiled in an appropriate manner; the event took place aboard the cruiser-carrier Cavour, the most modern ship in the Italian navy. Displacing 29,900 metric tons, the Cavour has a 722-foot-long flight deck with a 12-degree “ski jump” at the bow to assist the short takeoff of its AV8B or F-35B STOVL (short takeoff vertical landing) fighters, and the perfect stage for the new Guzzi. The Cavour is powered by four GE LM2500 gas turbines for a total of 88,000 kW (118,000 hp), reaching a top speed of 29 knots, adequate for providing local support for the US Navy carriers in the Mediterranean Sea.

Guzzi chose this highly emotional environment to showcase the V100 Aviazione Navale. The bike is finished in a fighter-gray paint scheme inspired by the Italian navy’s jets. Specifications-wise, the V100 Mandello Aviazione Navale is standard, using the model’s usual sound 115 hp engine. The bike is also equipped with tire-pressure sensors and heated grips.

Moto Guzzi will produce 1913 of these units, a number commemorating the year Italian naval aviation was established as an independent service arm. Each bike is numbered on the handlebar clamp and comes with a rain cover and a commemorative plaque.

With the Aviazione Navale edition of the V100 Mandello, Moto Guzzi joins the rest of the Italian motorcycle industry in creating special editions of their production models. With this bike, though, the historical ties are especially strong.
