The KTM 450 SMR is the ultimate competition-minded, turnkey supermoto platform. This is a motorcycle aimed at cracking the code of entry into this niche discipline of riding, and providing a wicked time on two wheels.

Following a seven-year hiatus within the North American market, KTM reintroduced the 450 SMR in 2021 in an effort to help revitalize the category. Now, the Orange Brigade has updated the supermoto with upgrades that follow suit of the heavily updated 2023 450 SX-F motocrosser without forgetting its tarmac focus.

Updates begin with an all-new hydroformed and laser-cut main frame with an overall emphasis on increased chassis feel and straight line stability. Longitudinal and torsional flex have been optimized through wall thickness and bracing. Improved anti-squat behavior is achieved via a new shock mount and complemented by an updated WP Xact rear shock with dedicated supermoto internal damping settings. The shock body is shorter, yet features the same suspension travel of 10.5 inches. A new die-cast aluminum swingarm with 22mm rear axle further improves the flex characteristics of the rear end.

To achieve a front-to-rear balance, KTM redesigned the CNC-machined triple clamps and updated the WP Xact 48mm fork. The clamps feature increased grip in the handlebar mount to prevent slip. New, wider footpegs improve rider contact. A new two-piece, polyamide reinforced aluminum subframe round out the chassis changes.

The SOHC 450cc single-cylinder engine has been updated significantly with a primary focus on mass centralization. The engine has been repositioned and tilted back within the new frame, placing the countershaft sprocket has been dropped by 3mm.

Hacking the rear end sideways on a supermoto bike may be the most exciting and satisfying feeling on two wheels. The KTM 450 SMR breaks the barriers for riders looking for a turnkey supermoto platform.

Overall, the engine is more compact and lighter than the previous iteration thanks to a number of internal and external changes. A low-profile cylinder head sees the single camshaft positioned closer to center of gravity, while updated intake ports create a more efficient tract for atomized air-fuel mix into the combustion chamber for improved power delivery. A new Pankl five-speed gearbox is aided by an OE-fitted quickshifter, which allows clutchless upshifts in second through fifth gear. A Keihin engine management system controls selectable traction control, launch control, and quickshifter settings, while two engine mappings are selectable on the fly.

The SMR is kept grounded via the same pair of Alpina 16.5-inch front and 17-inch rear spoked wheels, but now fitted with the Metzeler Racetec SM K1 rubber. Braking power is provided by a single four-piston Brembo calipers and 310mm disc up front, while a single-piston caliper and 220mm disc hack the rear end sideways. A Suter anti-hopping clutch keeps deceleration smooth and consistent.

Fresh bodywork and retro-inspired graphics give the 450 SMR a fresh look, like the rest of the KTM off-road lineup.

A splash of retro-inspired graphics with purple highlights nods to the ‘90s motocross scene.

Knowing the ridiculous fun we had during our first ride review of the 2021 KTM 450 SMR, the 2023 model will surely add to the excitement. Pricing and availability have yet to be announced.
