Husqvarna’ 2023 FS 450 is a competition-minded track-only supermoto receiving big upgrades for the new model year. Sound familiar? The KTM 450 SMR, the Husky’s Austrian counterpart, was recently unveiled with significant upgrades that follow changes made to its motocross siblings. It’s no surprise that the FS trails along with influence from the all-new Husqvarna FC 450 motocrosser.

Each of these models break the usual barriers of the supermoto category, offering a turn-key solution straight from the dealership so riders can skip the trials and tribulations of building their own.

An all-new laser-cut hydroformed steel frame headlines the changes to the FS 450. Longitudinal and torsional flex characteristics have been tailored for improved rider feel and feedback while improving overall balance and straight-line stability. The frame’s wall thicknesses have been changed to improve overall strength and reliability in high-stress areas, such as the head tube. A new shock tower is mounted to the frame’s side spars, not its backbone, allowing the FS to have a perimeter frame-style mount without perimeter frame rigidity.

There’s no more exhilarating feeling than hacking a supermoto sideways on corner entry. The FS 450 is one of two turn-key race-ready supermoto platforms offered by Austrian manufacturers.

An all-new polyamide-reinforced aluminum subframe, constructed of 60 percent polyamide and 40 percent aluminum, complements the new frame for optimized rigidity. Also new to the rear end is a cast aluminum swingarm with a 22mm rear axle designed to match the chassis’ updated flex characteristics.

The WP Xact front fork and rear shock have also been updated for 2023. The split damping function fork now features a new “hydrostop” that is said to improve bottoming resistance deep in the suspension stroke; the new component provides a more progressive damping force in the last 40 millimeters of travel, rather than the final 10 millimeters as in the previous iteration. Internal rebound damping has also been updated. The Xact rear shock has been redesigned with a shorter body for less weight, while retaining the same travel length. A new Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) optimized main piston is claimed to provide feel and support. The shock’s redesigned compression and rebound damping adjusters can be easily changed without tools.

In addition to the functional changes made to the FS 450, Husqvarna fitted sleek new bodywork for a fresh look.

Husqvarna also updated the SOHC 450cc single-cylinder engine, primarily focusing on mass centralization. The engine has been repositioned and tilted back two degrees within the new frame, lowering the countershaft sprocket by 3mm for improved anti-squat characteristics.

Engine internals get a number of revisions as well, including a redesigned low-profile cylinder head that positions the camshaft closer to the center of gravity. A new valve cover reduces the number of mounting screws necessary and a single oil-spray jet improves efficient cooling and low weight. A new cam chain, low-friction chain guides, and DLC rocker arm coating improve running efficiency. A new five-speed Pankl transmission now uses an OE-fitted quickshift system for seamless upshifts. A new left handlebar switch cluster controls selectable traction control, launch control, and quickshifter settings, with two engine mappings selectable on the fly.

The FS 450 is slowed by a single Brembo four-piston caliper and 310mm disc at the front, while a single-piston caliper and 220mm disc on the rear hacks slides and sheds speed. A pair of Alpina 16.5-inch front and 17-inch rear spoked wheels fitted with Metzeler Racetec SM K1 rubber keep firm ground contact.

Either the Husky FS 450 or the KTM 450 SMR look like a hell of a good time at the local kart track.
