Guest Posted January 12, 2009 Posted January 12, 2009 Broke down on the way home today. Just cut out at lights (as usual) and wouldnt run smoothly again, just idles and sputters out - then back to normal idle and sputter out - over and over again in perfect rythmic motion. They coulnt tow tonight so had to chain it to a street lamp in town. Any ideas?RAC guys says he thinks it could be the carb float?Luke Quote
Guest philgale Posted January 12, 2009 Posted January 12, 2009 sounds similar to my old bike, was just dirty fuel, have you ran it dry recently? Quote
Guest Posted January 12, 2009 Posted January 12, 2009 Not totally dry but I usually run it till I hit reserve Quote
Bill_on_a_bike Posted January 12, 2009 Posted January 12, 2009 Try not to let it get too near reserve you do run the risk of it sucking crap from the tank in.All you can do is get the carb off and check the float height. some bikes you can measure it with the carb still on. You got the manual? Quote
Guest Posted January 12, 2009 Posted January 12, 2009 you could try some fresh fuel and then fit an inline filter in the fuel line.. as a future job..also redex is good for cleaning out carbs, saves taking them apart.. Quote
Guest Posted January 12, 2009 Posted January 12, 2009 Thanks guys, im taking it in to the garage tomorrow for a full service, any idea how much this should be ? Quote
Guest Posted January 12, 2009 Posted January 12, 2009 Thanks guys, im taking it in to the garage tomorrow for a full service, any idea how much this should be ?Depends on the depth of the service, but Oil & Filter, and plugs and Air filter prob £100.. as its only a single..depends on how long finding your gremlins.. Guest Posted January 12, 2009 Posted January 12, 2009 Ok cool ill just ask him to do that... Not that i dont trust the man but - How do you know that he has actually changed the plugs/filter/oil? Guess its best to do it yourself... Quote

Guess its best to do it yourself...Do you know where the oil filter is? have a look, it's probably dirty the new one will be shiny..and if you look through the oil sight glass its probably black/dark, should be semi clear/opaque? (like when you look at new kitchen oil..)the plugs you'd have to take out and have a look.. but if the oils new and the filter you can take the plugs as have been done too.. Quote
Bill_on_a_bike Posted January 13, 2009 Posted January 13, 2009 Filter change, oil change, and spark change are the easiest bits of servicing imaginable, especially on a single cylinder bike, with no fairing.Unless this thing's under warrenty just do it yourself, it'll take you an hour absolute tops, once you've bought the new parts. Guest Posted January 13, 2009 Posted January 13, 2009 Bill on a bike's right, if you can manage to do an oil change yourself then its worth doing, you'll save money and feel better for it.. you can then continue learning with the plugs, air filter, chain adjustment etc..I'm doing a Oil and Filter change along with plugs and cleaning the air filters on both my GSX and my Mates (Jade Mongoose) Bandit this Sunday.. also looking at making a chain oiler out of scrap... like the ones in the scottoiler thread.. should be fun.. Guess its best to do it yourself...or if you dont trust the mech... take it somewhere else ..remember you are riding this bike and if you have no trust in theperson in charge of maintainence on it ....should you be riding it ? Is it safe and roadworthy ..i know your only on about oil & filter but seriously if you worry about that then how would your feelings be if it was for brake pads ,headstock bearings or other vital safety items ...ask to see the old parts .........if a visible filter scratch the paint with a recognisable mark Quote
Guest Posted January 14, 2009 Posted January 14, 2009 hey guys, he did a great job! Fixed it up a treat! im well happy! turns out it was a corroded wire that he had to replace that was making it cut out. Spongate Motorcycles Coventry - A* Recomended! Quote
Guest Posted January 21, 2009 Posted January 21, 2009 Had EXACTLY the same problem this morning, I didnt bother calling RAC I just walked the last mile to work, chained the bike to a fence obviously - Picked it up lunch time and it started right upCould this be CARB FREEZING?? If so what can I do about it? Quote
Bill_on_a_bike Posted January 21, 2009 Posted January 21, 2009 Lol withdrawing your previous commendation then.Have you let the engine warm up properly? weather like this a good minute or two with the choke out. Quote
Guest Posted January 21, 2009 Posted January 21, 2009 How far had you gone? How much fuel did you have?how cold was it?have a look under your carb, if there is a wire (electrical) then you have carb heater fitted..but am thinking that:A, you ran onto reserve, B, you still have dirt in the carb.need more info.. Guest Posted January 21, 2009 Posted January 21, 2009 http://www.reviewcentre.com/review190333.htmlGeneral CommentsMy Kawasaki Eliminator breaks down all the time, in the shop more times than on the road. Not very stable in the wet, it only likes sunny weather.jonwhitby on 24th Jan 2007I have the same problem, in particular in the cold. Possibly carb icing, the bikes engine is open to elements and the cold air kills it. Also wet weather causes the battery to go flat. I've called the RAC out 10 times now, yet every time I take it back to the garage (bearing in mind the bike is only 6 months old on an 06 plate) they can't find a fault. Have you had any luck?just1 on 22nd Feb 2007I gave up with this bike, does not like the winter - be warned. Even Kawasaki gave up with it.telecaster52 on 13th Jan 2009I bought my 07 Eliminator at the start of summer last year. I'm just now beginning to get these problems with the cold and the wet. It seems to be mostly the wet mine doesn't like - a sudden loss of power and when you roll to a stop the engine just ticks over but won't let you rev up. I leave it to dry out for 5 mins and then it seems to revive.I'm reluctant to give up on it though because it is a lovely ride to and from work, 20 miles each way. Quote
Guest Posted January 21, 2009 Posted January 21, 2009 Thanks a lot for the response! i had 10 litres of fuel at least, I had got 10 out of 11 miles to work, it was pretty cold but at the time I was just dodgin round traffic and got to fron of que and bam, wouldnt rev up, just tickin over a second then die, tick over, then dies over and over and give it any throttle and it cuts out totally! Glad its not just me having trouble, Could maybe some insulation round the carb help?? Quote
Guest Posted January 21, 2009 Posted January 21, 2009 PS. I dont think bromley changed the spark plug as the screw cap on top had come off and was stuck in the rubber spar plug cap - Itsd still there so either he just left it in and took the screw off the new one or he didnt change it...He says he cleaned the carb so....Im at a loss really... Quote
Guest Posted January 21, 2009 Posted January 21, 2009 undo the plug, if its burnt black, then its probably old.. a little soot is ok.. could be icing, but looking at it, your bikes not fond of the cold.. and cannot see an icing kit for your bike.. Quote
Guest Posted January 21, 2009 Posted January 21, 2009 Thanks, I might just get some exhaust insulation/repair tape an wrapp the carb up Quote
Bill_on_a_bike Posted January 21, 2009 Posted January 21, 2009 http://themotorbikeforum.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=17351&hilit=+carb+icingLol, you've advised me in that thread, on the same thing!Could try that product Stu mentions, Silkolene FST thing, I never did but it might be worth a try. Quote
