Advanced bike test

Hi,

i'm looking into doing my advanced motorcycle test. can anyone give me advise on training groups (Oxford area) and how long i can expect it to take to complete the training and be ready for the test?

i've seen a few posts refering to rospa and AIM. is there a recomended agency for motorcyclists?

Ross, both RoSPA and IAM will be fine, the main thing is to find a group or club that you enjoy being with as with any group its the people that make it.

TVAM, i did it with them, they have monthly meets at wokingham and you can get a free assessed ride without joining (joining fee includes test) then get a observer and rides, did mine with a guy on a BMW R75 tourer, nice bloke, and covered a lot of Oxfordshire area.

Both organisations offer similar training methods (advanced is the same no matter what terms you use!).

Differences are that RoSPA are made up of RoADAR local groups (RoSPA Advanced Driver And Riders Groups) each of which are autonomous but have the umbrella cover of international organisation, RoSPA. Each group basically is it's own entity.

IAM is a national with local groups. IAM take their lead from the national organisation.

RoSPA test is teired - Bronze Silver Gold (and fail of course!) with a retest every three years to keep your skill levels up.

IAM is a one off test which lasts for life. OK provided one keeps up with current trends and remains disciplined in the techniques!

Both offer social sides, and this can vary between regions. Some areas RoSPA is better socially, others IAM is the better - depends on the members.

IAM tend to turn up en masse and tutors are allocated weekly.

RoSPA will allocate a 'permenant' tutor for consistency. Again this can vary between groups.

IAM have a set national price structure.

RoSPA varies due to the autonomous nature of each group.

TVAM allocate one observer to each student, so you always go out with the same person, and can organise rides,

until you pass your IAM then you don't join the others on a en masse run, could be entertaining and scary..

they were recommended to me from a colleague with a Ducati, i was skeptical, but had a pleasant time, (we were both based near Wallingford)

i would recommend you go to a meet and have a freebie, and make your own choice.

also they do slow speed skills stuff and off road..
