rosszx9r Posted July 16, 2009 Posted July 16, 2009 Holy moley...thats expensive..!! Its high mileage..40k, but it is over 20 years old. he did mention the sliders rattling...but as hes the mechanic he ought to be able to fix it IMHO..Think i'll get it set up as best i can and then scour ebay for a good set of carbs...see if that fixes it.i've got a '94 zx9r and its carbs are fine (45k miles).... might need a new diaphram or emulsion tube to get it running right but having said that, replacements on ebay are only ~£40only trouble is, they might be just as bad/worn!you can't fix worn sliders but you should be able to find a ripped diaphram! it could also be a blocked diaphram air jet (very small, easily blocked and very easy to loose if you strip the carbs down!). you could check this yourself by getting at the carbs, sliding the sliders up and down with your finger... you should hear a swooshing sound as they move and they should not snap shut (but close under some sort of resistance)if you can get cheap carbs off ebay, go for it but i don't think there is that much wrong with the ones you have, just needs a good mechanic to look at them... Hi, living in denmark, but am english. Just had a major service on a 1986 gpz600r and i'm told the carbs are knackered, all a bit technical danish that i tried to follow, but the gist was at tickover and low revs the carbs are sucking in air from somewhere...sorry, not a mechanic...even if the idle screw is tightened or loosened completely (didnt get the translation) the engine is still revving too much..about 1500rpm..garage says get a new or good used set...any ideas out there folks? Seen used on ebay but id like an idea of price for new too...cheers..Mark Quote
Guest Posted July 16, 2009 Posted July 16, 2009 Cheers Walney...mines actually an 86...would i be right in assuming the carbs are the same as the later model gpzs...up to 1990 say? Quote
rosszx9r Posted July 17, 2009 Posted July 17, 2009 '94 zx9r 1986 gpz600r what i realise its a different bike.... same make and similar carbs. kawasaki use the same style carbs for years (even back in '86)so long as the carbs are the same bore, they are likely to be ok. you may have to swap the main and pilot jets over if carbs from a bigger bike are used. rosszx9r Posted July 19, 2009 Posted July 19, 2009 and that Kwak would have changed things in 8 years.. and models..why change perfection.... still, we agree on one thing nowt wrong with his carbs, it's just the mechanic Quote

Guest Posted July 19, 2009 Posted July 19, 2009 to check if rubbers are nacked let bike tickover at lowest revs before stalling [tin of wd40 reqd]spray carb rubbers [carb to head]yes it will give a few fumes just try to keep it on all the rubbers one at a time [if it rises that will be part of your problem [have seen this problem helped in two ways paint the carb rubbers with rubber solution [punture outfit glue]next nail varnish [this fills all the cracks and helps tickover Quote
Guest Posted July 19, 2009 Posted July 19, 2009 another quick test is to get a spray of easy start and spray in the area of the carbs, any leaks will draw in the mixture and the revs will climb... (like a hoover sucks up dust..) Quote
Guest Posted July 20, 2009 Posted July 20, 2009 did not say easy start as he might not relise how volitile it is spraying between number2/3 carb[ps he might be new to fixing bikes Quote
