Need a bit of advise with on few jobs that need I do on my bike so hopefully

someone can help.

1. The front forks are a bit pitted and could do with good going over

whats the best way to treat this ? Can they be polished ?

2. The rear swing arm is also pitted and it could do with being powder

coated is there anything special you need to do before they are

powdered ?

3. The bolts that hold the calipers together have a bit of rust on them

can this be cleaned / treated or will they need replaced ?

Im sure there will be more stuff I'll need answers for :D :D

Hi mate,

depends how bad the pitting is, normally you wait till its bad and the seals are failing then you either get them rechromes or buy new stantions. Neither is easy or particularly cheap.

if you take the swingarm to a decent powder coaters make sure you get one thats recommended as some are totally crap.

you need to take all the bearings out and blank off the threads and bearing faces...or youll knacker your powdercoat before its back on the bike.

Buy new bolts...its easier or clean then with brake cleaner, and polish them...depends how rusty really

If it's the alloy bit of your forks that is pitted try autosol and an electric toothbrush. they are lacquered usually so once the weather has penetrated it's a regular job.

Give the swing arm a good clean and touch it up with finnegans smoothrite. It's the smooth version of hammerite. A long handle on a small brush should get into the nooks and crannies

Replace corroded nuts, bolts and all fasteners. They have a habit of getting stuck.

if your on about the leg rather than the chrome stanction, you have two options,.. paint or polish.. if you polish, you'll need to do it often, paint is simpler, if you remove the legs and they can be taken apart and then painted, refit with fresh fork oil and seals.. can be sprayed (rattle can) then baked in the oven for a harder finish, did this with the fork legs on a Katana..

Easy cheap fix. Get you through the winter.

Of course we could dismantle the whole thing and have it electroplated with 18ct gold. A highly decorative and weather proof finish, but a bit OTT 8-)
