Hey all,

I'm going to be buying a new Almax chain for my bike, but I'm unsure what length to buy, it being my first security chain purchase ever I am unsure.

options being 0.7m, 1.5m, 2m, 2.5m.

would this vary on bike size? (I wouldnt think it would as it will be looping through bits of frame, rather than around the whole bike in some odd... hugging way)

My bike is a Megelli 125 s if it does matter though.

I'd have thought 1.5m or 2m would do the trick, but i'd be worried if I went for 2m and its rather long, there would be more excess chain for would be theives to attack.

In a nutshell, is there a good methos to try and find what length chain would suit best, or what do you lot use which seems to generally fit anything well?

thanks all.

how are you going to use it... 0.7 will go through a wheel and a nearby object..

1.5 would probably go through both wheels, i would go for 2m, get a length of rope, and see how long you would need it for normal use..

i have a small cable lock (0.7m) which goes through the back wheel and over the seat..

and a longer one to lock both wheel and a lamppost, or several bikes.. the longer one is a PITA to carry round.. so only comes with, when i expect i'll need it..

Aah you legend!

The old rope (or in my case probably string) trick, why did I not think of this!

Thanks for the advice, I will be locking it up in a rather crime busy area so I would be carrying this chain about most of the time... I assume in a backpack or tailpack or something until I stop and lock up!

I may think about this 0.7m lighter lock idea though for quick less risky stops, I have saw this back wheel + over seat technique used before.

if you use the seat / chain method, then if needed thread the chain through your helmet, if you want to leave it with the bike.. stops someone cutting the chinstrap to take the helmet...

After being in exactly your situation a year or so ago i rang Almax up. He recommended the 1.5m as the 2m is going to be more faff than it's worth (not his words, but i got what he meant). The Almax chains are very heavy and so the extra weight and size of the 2m will make it alot more trouble. I've been happy with my 1.5m to this day and would recommend that size myself.

You don't need to worry about it being too long as far as more surface area to attack though, it can be "threaded through" (for want of a better term) at any point to shorten it down to the desired length.

I think that if you're going to bother using an Almax chain you should make a point of putting the chain through the frame of the bike, and also anchoring to an immovable and solid object, as otherwise your bike will simply be lifted into the waiting van. You'll need more than 0.7m for that.

Aah thanks for the advice, good to hear from another Almax user, I will be getting the 1.5m worth I recon when I get round to ordering it.
