RicKsTa Posted October 31, 2009 Posted October 31, 2009 Hey, just a quick one really..Decided to get down n dirty and service my bike today.. (1st time ever due to me only having it a year and its my 1st bike)After finishing it all i checked the oil, it was looking full, i had put 3.6 litres in it to get it up to maximum line, or thereabouts. I ran the engine to let the oil drain into the filter and re-topped up the oil, eventually i put 4 litres in. Now the spyglass is still only showing midway between high and low level, and in my manual it says it should take 4 litres to fill a dry engine which is about right.. When i run the engine, the spyglass drains and shows no oil in it, im guessing its because its flowing the oil around all the parts, but im sure originally i could still see the oil when it was running.. Just want to check whether this is right as i dont wanna ruin it.. It registers as having nothing in the spyglass at all. When the engine is stopped and stood still, its re-fills back up midway between full and low..CheersRicky Quote
Guest Posted October 31, 2009 Posted October 31, 2009 What you descibe is correct matey!Serviced both bikes yesterday, both did that. Quote
Pete Posted October 31, 2009 Posted October 31, 2009 Yep, what Dan said. There should be no remaining oil in the spy glass when the engine's running. Quote
RicKsTa Posted October 31, 2009 Author Posted October 31, 2009 Cheers guys, just wasnt 100% so i thought ad get your help. Thanks again.. looks like im gonna go give her a blast now and see if theres any difference. im sure when i bought her the bike wasnt serviced, though the bloke i bought from said he did it himself.. was a little dubious coz he knew feck all about bikes! LOL.He couldnt even remember what a sidestand was called... Quote
Guest Posted October 31, 2009 Posted October 31, 2009 the oil is washed around the engine, so disappears from the sight glass, Quote
Guest Posted October 31, 2009 Posted October 31, 2009 perspex window covers mean you can see the effect of the oil when the engine is in motion.. similar to a washing machine.. Quote
Guest Posted October 31, 2009 Posted October 31, 2009 i normally measure the amount going in, run the bike around the block a couple of times then leave it to cool overnight. Then i check the level in the morning with the bike level and top up to the "upper" mark in the oil window Quote
Anthony Posted November 2, 2009 Posted November 2, 2009 i know what you ,mean, i always forget to throughly check how something works before i take it apart and then when it goes back together im unsure as to whether that is how its meant to work next time, check before hand then change and then check again, cant go wrong then (unless its wrong before) Quote
Colin the Bear Posted November 2, 2009 Posted November 2, 2009 The recommended way to check the oil level in the sight glass is to run the engine for a few minutes, switch off and leave it to stand for 2 minutes. Needless to say the bike should be level when inspecting. Leaving the bike longer will give a misreading. Some bikes have a level light, some have a pressure light. Don't know of any that have both. asharin Posted November 2, 2009 Posted November 2, 2009 My current bike is low tech...and has a dipstick (as well as the one riding it) Quote
