Hi. I've just bought a used Bonnie :D , and I'd like to do basic stuff on it - oil change, adjust brakes/suspension etc. It came with no tools at all, and I only have general household stuff at home - no spanners etc.

So, what would people recommend I buy to keep the bike safe and on the road, and to do oil and plugs etc. Not into major engine/frame work, I would rather trust an expert.

buy a multipurpose kit, with spanners, sockets and handle, allen keys etc.. and add to it as you need, you can get some good kits from halfords..

Cheers. Are there any special things - like for adjusting the shocks, removing plugs etc?

Halfords have their 150 piece Pro set reduced to £99.99 - click here.

It's a great set to get you started, all with a lifetime warranty.

Hi,

You don't say how old your Bonni is? You might want to check if the nuts & bolts are metric or the old imperial sizes before you go out and buy a service kit.

Excellent help folks, I'm really grateful. Its a 2005 Bonnie. Will I really need/use a full-on £100 kit. Won't a few bits and bobs do?

get a basic kit 40 piece or so, and upgrade as you go along..

To adjust the shocks on the Bonnie you need an Allen key (one comes with the bike under the right hand side panel) or a bar. There is a round lug on the side of the shock towards the bottom. Stick the Allen key in and turn the bottom of the shock round. You cannot use a C spanner on these shocks as there's no adjuster for one.

If you want to take the plugs out and the Air Injection is still fitted then you will need to remove the fuel tank to get onto the plugs, as otherwise you can't get the plug spanner on the plug. To remove the tank you'll need a torx bit iirc, and a pair of pliers for the fuel hose under the tank. You also need that Allen key from under the side panel as it fits the bolts at the back of the seat, which you have to remove also to get the tank off.

You will need a 63mm oil filter tool for filter changes. 14mm (I think) socket for the drain plug.

Air filter cover is held on by 3 screw - either an 8mm spanner or a Philips head screwdriver needed, but you also need aither a coin or large flat blade screwdriver to take the left hand side panel off.
