GARYJL Posted December 11, 2009 Posted December 11, 2009 About 10 days ago I stopped of on the way to work at the post office and when I came backout the bike wouldnt start becasue the battery had gone a bit flat, luckly there is a Hondadealer directly opposite and they put it on a booster and got it going again.I took the battery out a couple of days ago and put it on an oximiser to charge and earlierI went out and fitted it again but when I tried to start it it just continued to turn over butwouldnt start. I noticed that as it turned over it give the occasional flicker of flames outof the exhaust, I also noticed that I had left the choke on a bit. Quote
Guest Posted December 11, 2009 Posted December 11, 2009 Whats the bike Gary?EDIT: Check all the obvious, killswitch, enough fuel etc etc. Does the fuel pump prime? Is it injection or carbs? Is it damp? Quote

GARYJL Posted December 11, 2009 Author Posted December 11, 2009 As said above CBR600F Carb model, kill switch is working ok but dont knowhow to tell if the fuel pump primes ? Quote
Guest Posted December 11, 2009 Posted December 11, 2009 on a fuel injected model when you turn it on, you hear it prime. I know little about carbed models other than the obvious. Calling WalneyFrankie!!! Hopefully he may be able to offer more assistance than me. Quote
Guest Posted December 11, 2009 Posted December 11, 2009 check fuel tap are all hoses connected.. remove plug, check condition (see haynes), spark, and sniff for petrol smell.. if you get spark and petrol smell, then sounds like you have fuel and ignition.. might want to remove plugs and let engine breathe (build up of petrol..), and clean plugs with wet/dry and retry.. see how you go from that.carbs have no pump, they are vacuum fed.. (hence checking hoses above)(generally, but i have heard of pumps being fitted..mainly aftermods..) Quote
GARYJL Posted December 11, 2009 Author Posted December 11, 2009 The WalneyFrankie im going to buy a new battery tomorrow and mightbuy a new set of plugs while im there. Quote

Colin the Bear Posted December 13, 2009 Posted December 13, 2009 Are we trying to start a hot bike with full choke and flooding it, filling the end can with fuel that ignites and flames? Quote
GARYJL Posted December 13, 2009 Author Posted December 13, 2009 Are we trying to start a hot bike with full choke and flooding it, filling the end can with fuel that ignites and flames? The bikes cold and it was sitting for a few days and wont start but when I dotry to start it it just cranks but wont start and gives a few flashes of flame anda bang from the exhaust. Quote
Colin the Bear Posted December 13, 2009 Posted December 13, 2009 Not the battery then if it's cranking. Fuel in the exhaust is causing the back firing. So I'd be looking for an ignition problem. (no spark) As said I'd replace the plugs. It's allways a good starting point. They may be fouled. (Dirty/wet). Look at the condition of the old ones as you take them out. They should tell you a story. Make sure you gap the new plugs correctly. Maybe give the battery a charge as it's getting a lot taken out trying to start the bike. With new plugs and a full battery be careful not to flood the engine as you start it. It's easy done in cold weather. Quote
GARYJL Posted December 13, 2009 Author Posted December 13, 2009 Well a new battery and a bit of patients seems to have sorted my problem (Fingers Crossed).Got a new battery and give it a full charge overnight which brought it up to more power thanthe old one ever had, still took a bit to get her going but a bit of persistance playing with thethrottle and choke and she jumped into life after a few false starts. Let her run for a bit andtook her a quick run to try to clear any crap out so hopefully thats it sorted, any more problemsand I'll leave it into the local bike shop.Again many thanks to everyone for their help especially WalneyFrankie who should probably havehis own section on the forum Quote
Guest Posted December 13, 2009 Posted December 13, 2009 again many thanks to everyone for their help especially WalneyFrankie who should probably havehis own section on the forum LOL many thanks and i do, i hang around Pitstop... Quote
Colin the Bear Posted December 13, 2009 Posted December 13, 2009 I'd still change the plugs. A bike that is a bit awkward to start will slowly take more out of the battery than is going back in. New plugs will help it leap into life. Better fuel economy and performance too. Quote
