newbie question regarding charging batteries

Recommended Posts

I just bought a new 12v 2.5aH battery for my CG125 .... I also bought off Ebay a simple cheap 12v trickle charger with a constant output of 500mA @ 15v..... I'm just not sure how many hours I should charge the battery for, as different forums are giving conflicting answers.... hope someone can shed some light.

Hey mate !

welcome to the forum, pop into newbies and say Hi :thumb:

As for ya battery ... is it a bike specific unit? Can't really go wrong with them... just plug in and forget ... the Optimate springs to mid, as does the oximiser ...

some more knowledgable peeps shall be along soon.... in the meantime I have moved this into Pitstop!! :D

Hello mate, welcome along.

Like Dan says something like an Optimate or Oxford Oximiser would be great because you can just plug them in and forget about it (they know when to stop charging when the battery is full). If it's a basic plug in one that just looks like a phone charger I don't know. I'd be inclined to leave it on overnight, but don't take my word for it because having never used one I don't know if they can over charge your battery!

A few people on the forum have used them though so they'll be able to help more..

any info on the charger? make model etc..?

does the charger have idiot lights, for reverse connections, charging, and charged??

generally 24hrs is the norm for a first charge

500mA = 0.5Ah.

Therefore 2.5Ah = 5 hours of charging at 500mA (0.5Ah).

Theroetically.

In the real world, i can't help much unfortunately.

if its a new battery it shouldnt need a charge.

I dont like the sound of a constant output you run the risk of overcharging.

A good trickle charger will analyse the battery hourly, top up only when necessary and maintain it.Can be left on for years without worry.
